Percentage grades at Georgian College

Georgian uses a 100-point percentage grading scale for most courses, and the percentage is the grade you receive. The college's letter grades and 4-point figures are equivalents it uses to establish equivalencies when required. The chart gives ranges of points for some bands (for example, 3.0 to 3.9 for 70 to 79 per cent), so no single point value is stored for those bands.

The passing grade for most courses is 50 per cent, though some programs require a higher grade.

How Georgian calculates your GPA

Georgian's GPA is a percentage average, not a 4-point average. Each course's quality points equal the percentage grade earned (0 to 100). The quality points are multiplied by the course credits (a 42-hour course is 3 credits), and the total is divided by total credits.

There are three averages:

  • Institutional/semester GPA: all credit courses in the term; it determines promotional status.
  • Cumulative GPA: all courses taken.
  • Program/graduation GPA: only courses used towards graduation. Failed courses and courses not applicable to the program are excluded.

A failure (F) counts as 49 per cent in the institutional/semester GPA. Other grading symbols are not counted, and course exemptions are not included.

If you repeat a course, the highest grade is the grade of record in the semester and program GPAs. All attempts stay on the transcript and count in the cumulative GPA.

Academic standing

Standing is based on your institutional/semester GPA each term. Some programs set higher requirements.

  • Good standing: 60 per cent or higher in your last term.
  • Academic probation: 50 to 59 per cent in your last term. You may proceed to the next term.
  • Academic warning: 50 to 59 per cent in your last two terms, or 49 per cent or lower in your last term.
  • Academic suspension: you were on warning and did not reach 60 per cent. You must withdraw for two terms (typically eight months). On return, you need at least 60 per cent in your first term back.
  • Academic dismissal: after suspension, you did not reach 60 per cent in the last term. You are withdrawn from your program and the college for one calendar year.

You may normally attempt a course twice; a third attempt needs approval from your dean/associate dean and the Office of the Registrar. A clinical, practicum or field placement may be attempted only once; a second attempt needs the same approval.

How is my overall average worked out at Georgian College?
Your overall average is the credit-weighted average of your semester averages: (average₁ × credits₁ + … + averageₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick average + credits entry, and it works out your overall average on every save, edit and delete.
