University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore GPA Calculator

UET Lahore grades on a relative scale, not against fixed percentage cut-offs. The Undergraduate Semester Regulations govern the semester system of teaching and examination for all undergraduate degrees awarded by the university, and they set no university-wide percentage band for any letter grade — the marks needed for a given grade depend on how your own class performed in that subject.

Letter grades in Type-A subjects (theory) must be awarded on a relative scale. Grades in Type-B subjects (practical, studio and laboratory work) and Type-C subjects (comprehensive projects) may instead be awarded on an absolute scale, if the subject teacher deems it fit. The subject teacher awards the grades, and the chairperson of the degree-awarding department is consulted before they are finalised.

For relative grading, the regulations set out the steps a teacher may follow:

• A minimum marks threshold linked to content mastery is established for a passing grade; students earning marks below it are awarded an F.
• An expected maximum marks threshold is also established; any student crossing it is awarded an A+.
• Students earning marks between the two thresholds are listed in descending order of merit, and the class average and standard deviation are computed.
• The cluster of students falling within half a standard deviation of the average may be graded C+ or B-. Passing grades run from A (the highest) down to D (the lowest).
• The remaining passing grades may be awarded by clustering students within narrow ranges when the class has fewer than 100 students, or on a normal-curve basis when it has more than 100. An upper limit on the percentage of students who may earn a particular passing grade can be imposed if required.

Two consequences follow that catch students out. First, a class need not award every letter grade: the regulations state it is possible that no student falls below the minimum threshold, that no student is in the instructor’s opinion eligible for the award of an A, or that no one qualifies for some intermediate grade. Second, letter grade thresholds cannot be appealed — the grievance procedure expressly excludes both the marks awarded in an assessment instrument and the letter grade thresholds from review or discussion.

UET Lahore reports a semester GPA for each term and a CGPA covering every subject taken across all semesters completed so far. Both are credit-hour weighted: each subject’s grade points are multiplied by its credit hours and the total is divided by the credit hours counted, so a 4 credit-hour subject moves your average four times as much as a 1 credit-hour one. Grade points, semester GPA and CGPA are computed and notified by the Controller of Examinations at the end of each semester.

Four rules shape the result more than students expect:

• An A+ does not beat an A. The regulations state plainly that “the grade points of ‘A+’ and ‘A’ are same” — both carry 4.0. An A+ goes to a student crossing the subject’s expected maximum threshold as recognition of exceptional performance; it does not raise your GPA above what an A already gives.
• W, WF and IP are excluded from the GPA. Withdrawn (W), forced-withdrawal (WF) and in-progress (IP) subjects appear on the transcript but are not used in computing GPA. For a Type-C subject carried as IP, the grade awarded in the semester the subject is completed is the one counted, using the total credit hours of the subject or sequel of subjects.
• An Incomplete (I) is temporary, not harmless. It is not treated as an F while it stands, but if the outstanding work is not completed within the following semester the Controller of Examinations converts it to an F.
• A failed elective can be taken out of the CGPA if an alternate elective was studied in its place — but this is not automatic. The student must apply to the Controller of Examinations to avail it.

UET Lahore escalates in two steps, both pinned to a 2.0 threshold:

• Warning — your GPA falls below 2.0 in any semester while your CGPA remains above 2.0.
• Probation — your CGPA falls below 2.0 after any semester.
• Separation from the University — you remain on probation for two consecutive regular semesters. A summer semester falling between or after those two regular semesters counts in your favour: the advantage of repetition in summer is given to the student.

A separated student may apply to the Vice Chancellor for re-admission. If the application is accepted, the department transfers eligible subjects from the previous registration and assigns a new entry session and registration number for the purpose of computing maximum degree duration. A student separated a second time is not granted a second re-admission.

Attendance is a separate route to trouble. Failing to maintain 75% attendance in a subject earns a WF grade for it. A relaxation of up to 10% may be allowed after approval by the Dean, on review by the chairperson; anything beyond 10% is referred to the Vice Chancellor. A WF is not counted in your GPA, but it leaves the subject outstanding — and no compulsory subject may carry a W, WF, I or F grade when you claim your degree.

Time is the third constraint. The maximum duration is six academic years for a programme whose minimum duration is four years, and seven for a five-year programme. The Vice Chancellor may grant an extension of up to one further year; a student who needs longer than that is separated from the University.

To qualify for the award of an undergraduate degree at UET Lahore you need a minimum CGPA of 2.0, together with three further conditions:

• No compulsory subject left outstanding with a W, WF, I or F grade during any semester of the degree programme.
• Any elective in which you earned a W, WF or F must have been repeated, or an alternate elective studied in its place, to fulfil the credit-hour requirement.
• The prescribed number of credit hours completed — a minimum of 130 and a maximum of 136 for programmes with a minimum duration of four academic years, and 162 to 170 for five-year programmes. Both include at least 6 credit hours of final year design project or equivalent, spread over two semesters.

Meeting the requirements is not the final step. You must submit a Degree Requirements Completion Form (Form 2) to your chairperson for onward submission to the Controller of Examinations; degree status is decided only after that form is received.

UET Lahore recognises strong performance in two ways — one at graduation, one every semester.

Degree with Honours. Awarded only when all four conditions are met:

• A CGPA of 3.70 or above out of a maximum of 4.00;
• No subject repeated;
• No subject withdrawn with a W or WF grade;
• No F earned in any core or elective subject during the course of study.

Medals and merit positions are awarded only to students who have earned a degree with Honours, and are based on the CGPA held at the time of graduation. The comparison is made within students of the same entry session who graduate in the minimum permissible duration, so taking extra semesters removes you from the merit pool. Migrated and re-admitted students are not eligible for any medal or merit position.

Dean’s Honour Roll. At the end of each semester there is a Dean’s Honour Roll of students earning a semester GPA of 3.7 and above, without any W, WF or F grade, while registered in at least 15 credit hours during that semester. There is no Dean’s Honour Roll for summer semester results.

Credits brought into UET Lahore count toward your degree but not toward your CGPA. The regulations state that the GPA of transferred credits is not counted in the calculation of CGPA, and that only “Transferred” is written against those subjects on the transcript. Your UET CGPA is therefore built solely from the subjects you actually study here.

For students migrating in from another institution:

• Migration is open to students of other HEC-approved universities and programmes accredited by PEC or PCATP, in the same programme, under the university’s Migration Rules.
• The subject must correspond to a subject offered by UET, or be deemed equivalent in depth and intensity.
• You must have earned at least 40% marks under an absolute grading system, or a minimum grade of C under a letter grading system similar to UET’s. Where a transcript shows both letter grades and marks, only the letter grade is considered.
• The credits accepted for transfer may not exceed one-half (50%) of the total credits required to complete that programme, in any case.
• A migrating student who is deficient in subjects compared with the class joined must repeat those subjects — though a subject being studied for the first time is not classified as a repeat.

One consequence is easy to miss: migrated students are neither eligible for a merit position nor a degree with Honours. The same exclusion applies to re-admitted students — whose subjects and grades from the previous five years, in which a grade of C or above was earned, stand transferred — to double-degree students transferring credits from a first degree within the university, and to exchange students who studied elsewhere under an HEC- or university-approved scheme.
