Grading System Overview
Adelphi University uses a plus/minus letter grading system. Passing grades, in rank order, are A, B, C, D, and P (Pass); the failing grade is F. D grades are not awarded in graduate courses. Instructors submit final grades within 48 hours of a course's scheduled final examination.

How the GPA Is Calculated
Semester GPA is computed as the total quality points earned divided by the total quality hours attempted; cumulative GPA is calculated the same way across all coursework at Adelphi. Quality points equal a course's grade points multiplied by its credit hours.
Grades of P (Pass), AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), MG (Missing Grade), and W (Withdrawal) are not computed in the GPA; a grade of F is computed even when earned through the Pass/Fail option.
For coursework repeated in Fall 2023 or later, only the most recent grade counts toward the GPA if the course is designated non-repeatable for credit; both grades count if the course is repeatable for credit. Repeats completed before Fall 2023 counted both grades toward the GPA.
The Pass/Fail option is unavailable to students with a semester or cumulative GPA below 2.0, and at most eight Pass/Fail courses may count toward the bachelor's degree.

Transfer and AP Credit
Advanced placement and transfer credit hours are excluded when the cumulative GPA is computed; the GPA is calculated only on quality hours earned at Adelphi. For example, a student presenting 120 credits for graduation, including 8 credits of advanced placement or transfer credit, has a cumulative GPA computed on the remaining 112 Adelphi credits.
