COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) GPA Calculator

COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) uses absolute grading on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale. Your semester percentage falls into a fixed marks band, and each band carries a single fixed grade point — the value depends only on your marks, not on how the rest of your class performed, and it does not rise with your exact mark inside the band. The full band-to-grade-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference above.

Marks are matched to a band after rounding: your percentage is rounded to the nearest whole number first (a tenths digit of 5 or above rounds up, below 5 rounds down), and the resulting whole number determines your grade.

The scale tops out at 4.00 (grade A) and bottoms at 0.00 (grade F, for a percentage below 50); the lowest grade above F is D, awarded from 50%. This criteria was approved by the CUI Academic Council and applies university-wide to both graduate and undergraduate programs, effective from the Fall 2021 intake.

For students in MS and PhD programs at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), the mark needed to pass a course depends on when you were admitted. Students admitted in or after Fall 2021 pass a course at 50%, a D grade. Students admitted before Fall 2021 pass at 60%, a C grade, and are graded under the grading policy that was in force at that time.

Within a course, the percentage that produces your grade is built from the mid-term examination (25%), quizzes and assignments (25%), and the terminal examination (50%). A course that carries a laboratory component applies the same split to the lab, and a graduate student must pass the theory and the lab separately — failing either one is a failure in the whole course.

Two further rules decide what reaches a graduate student's GPA and CGPA:

• Non-credit (NC) courses are excluded. A course registered as NC is not used in computing GPA or CGPA, whether it is passed or failed. Only passed NC courses appear on the transcript, listed separately, and the Departmental Advisory Committee states whether an NC course must be passed before further study or whether attending it is enough.
• Short attendance produces an F. A graduate student must have attended 80% of the classes, lectures, practicals and laboratory work in a course to sit its terminal examination. The Head of Department may condone up to 10% on the course teacher's recommendation; a student still short of the requirement is not allowed to sit the terminal examination and is awarded an F in that course.

For students admitted to MS and PhD programs at COMSATS University Islamabad in or after Fall 2023, good academic standing (GAS) means holding a CGPA of at least 2.5/4.0 at the end of every semester. These are the graduate standards, established by the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASAR): the Graduate Handbook covers MS and PhD programs and does not set the thresholds for CUI's undergraduate degrees.

Falling below the standard starts a two-step process:

• Probation (PRB) — applied in any semester the CGPA drops below 2.5/4.0.
• Dismissal (DIS) — if the CGPA has not come back up to at least 2.5/4.0 in the next semester, the student is dropped from the graduate program and the admission stands cancelled without any notice.
• Dismissal for a repeated failure — a graduate student who is awarded an F grade twice in the same course is dismissed from the program.

A failed course carries one opportunity to reappear, by repeating that same course whenever it is next offered. The student has to pass the course they were originally registered in and cannot register a different course in its place.

MS and PhD students admitted in or before Spring 2023 are instead governed by the Two ‘C’ Grade Policy, which counts grades of C or lower rather than the CGPA. Under it, a graduate degree may be awarded with at most one course at C or lower (F excluded). A student who takes C or lower in more than one course in the first semester is dismissed, as is one who accumulates C or lower in more than two courses in later semesters. A student sitting at one or two such courses may continue with probation status and a single chance to improve each of them; the probation clears when the final result is declared, provided every remaining course is passed in a grade higher than C. As with a failed course, the improvement must be taken in the same course.

For students in MS and PhD programs at COMSATS University Islamabad, the requirements for the award of a degree differ by level. An MS is awarded on a CGPA of 2.5/4.0, together with the final copy of the thesis, a “Certificate of Originality”, a plagiarism report, and any further requirements notified by the relevant authorities. A PhD additionally requires a published research article. These are the graduate thresholds — the Graduate Handbook covers MS and PhD programs and does not set the CGPA floor for CUI's undergraduate degrees.

The coursework behind an MS is a minimum of 30 credit hours: at least 24 credit hours of coursework from the relevant Scheme of Studies plus 6 credit hours of research thesis. An MS with Non-Thesis Option, offered only in programs specifically approved by BASAR and the Academic Council of CUI, replaces the thesis with a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework and a non-credit project or report.

A PhD is conferred only after at least one research article from the thesis research work has actually been published in an HEC-recognised journal. The paper must be published after synopsis approval and must be relevant to the thesis; in the sciences it has to appear in an HEC-approved W or X category journal, while a Y category journal is acceptable only in the social sciences. PhD coursework is 18 credit hours of graduate-level courses, preferably completed in the first two semesters, and BASAR may grant an exemption of up to two courses on the recommendation of the student's supervisory committee.

Throughout the program, MS and PhD students must also hold the 2.5/4.0 CGPA required for good academic standing at the end of each semester.

Academic medals at COMSATS University Islamabad are governed by the Office of the Registrar's notification on the Award of Academic Medals, issued to all campus directors, all deans and the Controller of Examinations. It sets one medal policy for graduating students in their respective degree programs across CUI's campuses, and does not limit itself to a particular degree level.

Medals sit at two levels, and the CGPA a graduating student reaches decides which of them they may compete for:

• Patron's Gold Medal — a CGPA of 4.0.
• Institute's Gold, Silver and Bronze medals — a CGPA of 3.75 and above. These are the institutional medals.
• Campus's Gold, Silver and Bronze medals — a CGPA of 3.50 and above.

These are eligibility thresholds, not automatic awards. Reaching the CGPA makes a graduating student eligible to be considered for and to compete for the medal; the Institute's and the Campus's Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are then decided on the basis of merit among the students eligible to compete. Students admitted into a particular degree program in a particular year or session compete as one group, irrespective of their sections or of morning and evening distinctions.

Two conditions narrow the field before CGPA is considered at all. A graduating student is eligible only if they have not failed in or repeated any course, and only if they completed the degree requirements within the minimum prescribed time period — without any break, including freezing of or absence from any semester.

The remaining rules decide how medals are held and handed over:

• One person is entitled to only one institutional medal at a time.
• A graduating student may qualify to receive both the campus and the institutional medals.
• Where students finish on the same CGPA, compared to two decimal places, each of them is entitled to the medal.
• Medals are awarded only during the respective convocation.
