How grading works at Riphah International University

Riphah uses an absolute, marks-based grading system for its undergraduate (semester) programs: each course carries 100 marks, combining continuous assessment, a mid-semester exam, and an end-semester (terminal) exam, and every mark range maps to a fixed letter grade and grade point on a 0.00–4.00 scale. The minimum passing mark is 50% — anything below that is an F.

Where a class has more than 20 students, the department may instead adopt a relative (curve-based) grading system under HEC guidelines, at the university's discretion.

These regulations govern general/BS semester programs. Programs supervised by a professional council — for example MBBS/BDS under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), or programs under PEC, PCP, PNC and similar bodies — instead follow that council's own grading rules, which supersede this table.

How Riphah calculates SGPA and CGPA

Riphah reports a Semester GPA (SGPA) for each term and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all semesters, both weighted by course credit hours and rounded to two decimal places on the transcript.

  • Withdrawn (W) and Incomplete (I) grades are excluded from both SGPA and CGPA.
  • When a course is repeated, the earlier attempt's grade is replaced on the transcript with R and dropped from the CGPA calculation — only the new attempt counts, unless the new grade is actually lower, in which case the original grade is kept and the repeat attempt is marked W instead.
  • A course's combined marks are rounded to the nearest whole number once (0.5 and above rounds up) before a grade is assigned.

Academic probation and relegation at Riphah

Riphah undergraduates must maintain a CGPA of at least 2.00 throughout their studies. Falling below 2.00 at the end of any regular semester adds one to a running probation count; the count resets to zero once CGPA is back to 2.00 or above.

  • In the first semester, a GPA between 1.0 and below 1.5 triggers a serious warning (the student's last chance to reach a 2.00 semester GPA); a first-semester GPA below 1.0 leads to dismissal from the program.
  • Reaching a probation count of three results in relegation: the student may only re-register for courses they need to repeat (no new courses), must maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.00 while relegated, and needs a CGPA of 2.00 or above to exit relegation status.

What it takes to graduate from Riphah

A Riphah undergraduate degree is awarded once a student completes every requirement of their program — including, for most programs, a mandatory 3-credit-hour field experience/internship of six to eight weeks — while keeping their CGPA at or above the university-wide 2.00 academic-deficiency floor throughout the program (falling and staying below it leads to probation and, eventually, relegation or dismissal rather than graduation).

Medals and academic honors at Riphah

Riphah recognizes top performers each semester and at graduation:

  • Vice Chancellor's List — semester GPA of 3.7 or above, no repeated courses, no disciplinary action that semester.
  • Dean's List — semester GPA of 3.5 or above, no repeated courses, no disciplinary action that semester.
  • Zulfiqar Gold Medal — awarded to the student with the highest CGPA in their batch (minimum 3.5), provided they scored Grade C or above in every course, never repeated or withdrew from a course or took an I grade, faced no disciplinary punishment, and completed the entire program at the same department and campus.
  • Chancellor Gold Medal — same eligibility bar as the Zulfiqar Gold Medal, but ranked on a blended score: 70% academic performance, 15% co-curricular activities (e.g. research publications, academic competitions), and 15% extra-curricular activities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Riphah International University?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Riphah International University?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Riphah International University GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from Riphah International University?

You need to keep your CGPA at or above 2.00 throughout your program, along with completing all program requirements (including any mandatory internship/field experience). Dropping below 2.00 triggers probation rather than blocking graduation outright, but repeated semesters below the floor can lead to relegation or dismissal before you'd reach graduation.

What is the minimum passing mark at Riphah International University?

Each course is marked out of 100, and the minimum passing mark is 50%. Scoring below 50 in a course results in an F grade (0 grade points), and the course must be repeated.

Does Riphah International University use relative grading?

Not by default. Riphah's standard grading is absolute — a course's marks map to a fixed letter grade and grade point. However, departments may adopt a relative (curve-based) grading system, per HEC guidelines, for classes of more than 20 students.

If I repeat a course at Riphah, which grade counts?

Normally the new attempt's grade is used in your CGPA, and the old grade is relabeled R on your transcript without affecting your GPA history. If your new attempt actually comes out lower than the original grade, the university keeps your original (higher) grade instead and marks the repeat attempt as W (withdrawn) so it doesn't pull your CGPA down.

Does Riphah's undergraduate grading apply to MBBS and BDS students?

No. These Academic Regulations govern general semester/BS programs. Professional programs supervised by their own regulatory council — MBBS and BDS under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), for example — instead follow that council's grading rules, which supersede this table.
