National Defence University (NDU) GPA Calculator

NDU's Faculty of Contemporary Studies (FCS) grades coursework on an absolute percentage scale: each course's marks are converted to a letter grade and quality points (0.00–4.00) using a fixed grading grid, rather than by comparing students against their class. The minimum passing mark for any course is 50% — a student scoring below 50% is deemed to have failed that course.

Both A+ and A carry the same 4.00 quality points and are distinguished only by their marks band (A+ is 90% and above, A is 80–89.99%); there is no D or D+ grade — the grid runs A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, F.

A student who fails a course (F grade) must repeat it or an equivalent course; a passing grade can also be improved by repeating the course. Students may improve up to six courses at BS level and three courses at MPhil/MS and PhD level during their entire degree.

When a course is repeated, the old grade is cancelled and only the latest grade counts toward CGPA — except when a student takes a different course in place of one they failed, in which case both courses and grades appear on the transcript.

Students marked absent from a final exam (medical or otherwise) are recorded as failed with an F grade and must clear it like any other fail.

A student is considered academically deficient if, in a semester, they earn one or more F grades, one or more I (Incomplete) or W (Withdrawn) grades, or fall below the required CGPA — 2.00 for BS or 3.00 for MPhil/MS and PhD.

Students must also maintain that same minimum GPA every semester; falling below it places a student on probation. A student who fails to meet the minimum GPA in two consecutive semesters is given one concession to continue — granted only once during the entire program. Failing a second time under this rule means the student ceases to be a student of the University, though an official transcript of completed courses and grades is still issued.

To complete a degree at NDU's Faculty of Contemporary Studies, a student must meet the program's minimum CGPA in addition to its credit-hour and time-period requirements:

• BS — minimum CGPA 2.00, 132 credit hours, 8 semesters (4 years) minimum / 12 semesters (6 years) maximum.
• MPhil/MS — minimum CGPA 3.00, 24 credit hours plus thesis, 3 semesters (1.5 years) minimum / 6 semesters (3 years) maximum (with a possible one-semester extension).
• PhD — minimum CGPA 3.00, 18 credit hours plus thesis, 6 semesters (3 years) minimum / 12 semesters (6 years) maximum.

No student may continue beyond the maximum time period under any circumstances.

NDU's Financial Aid Office awards a Scholarship on Academic Excellence to the top two position holders in each class (BS semesters 1–7, MPhil semesters 1–2) whose SGPA exceeds 3.75. The award is a 50% tuition fee concession for the following semester, open to all BS and MPhil students regardless of how they were admitted (Armed Forces nomination, NDU employee, or other scholarship holder) — provided the student maintains good discipline and moral conduct. Students facing misconduct charges are not eligible.
