How grading works at AIOU

As a distance-education university, AIOU runs two grading schemes side by side, applied by enrollment cohort rather than by a single university-wide switchover date: a legacy letter scheme for students who were “enrolled under grading scheme,” and the current GPA/CGPA Scheme for students “enrolled under GPA/CGPA Scheme.” The current scheme runs on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale.

The minimum passing mark is 50%; scoring below 50% overall in a course results in an F grade (0.00 grade points).

How a course grade is assessed at AIOU

For BS programmes, a course grade is built from three weighted components: assignments (20%), workshop attendance/quizzes (30%), and the final exam (50%).

Since Autumn 2021, securing passing marks in the assignment and workshop components individually is not compulsory — but scoring at least 50% in the final exam is mandatory. A student who scores 50% or more in the final exam but falls short of 50% aggregate marks overall is still declared Fail in that course.

Repeating a failed course at AIOU

AIOU discontinued its former Reappear and Again Reappear policy for BS programmes. A student who fails a course must instead re-register, re-enroll, or re-admit in that course the next time it is offered in a subsequent semester — there is no separate reappear-exam route to clear a fail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at AIOU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at AIOU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing percentage at AIOU?

You need at least 50% overall to pass a course at AIOU. For BS programmes, scoring at least 50% in the final exam is mandatory regardless of your assignment and workshop scores — falling short of 50% aggregate still results in a Fail even with a passing final-exam score.

Does AIOU allow reappear exams for a failed course?

No. AIOU discontinued the Reappear and Again Reappear policy for BS programmes. If you fail a course, you must re-register, re-enroll, or re-admit in that course when it is next offered.

How is a BS course grade weighted at AIOU?

For BS programmes, a course grade combines assignments (20%), workshop attendance/quizzes (30%), and the final exam (50%). Since Autumn 2021, only the 50% final-exam floor is mandatory — passing the assignment and workshop components individually is not required.
