How grading works at PIEAS
PIEAS uses an absolute grading system: each course carries 100 marks, and the percentage you score maps to a fixed letter grade and grade point — there is no cohort-relative curve. Grade points, GPA and CGPA are all calculated on a scale of 4. The exact percentage bands, letter grades and grade points are listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.
A distinctive feature of the PIEAS scale is that both A+ and A carry the maximum 4.0 grade points, and the passing floor sits at 45% (grade D, 1.0 grade point) rather than the 50% common elsewhere in Pakistan. A score below 45% is an F and earns 0.00.

How PIEAS calculates GPA and CGPA
PIEAS reports a semester GPA for each term and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all completed semesters, both weighted by course credit hours. Grade points are computed to the third decimal place and then rounded to two decimals.
- A grade of D (45–49%, GP 1.0) is counted toward your GPA, but the course must be repeated to raise it to at least a C (GP 2.0 / 50%).
- The BS final-year project is assigned a numeric grade and counts toward the CGPA.
- Courses taken in a summer session count toward the CGPA but are not used in any semester's GPA, and summer probation/termination rules do not apply.
- Transferred credits are not counted in the CGPA (see the transfer section below).

Probation and termination at PIEAS
A BS student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.33 in every semester. Falling below 2.33 in any semester places the student on probation.
- A student on probation carries a reduced load of 9–12 credit hours in the following semester.
- Probation is decided on the current semester's GPA; a student whose CGPA is already at or above 2.33 is not placed on probation despite a weak semester.
- A student who fails to recover to a 2.33 GPA and has been on probation in the two preceding semesters ceases to be a student of PIEAS — probations cannot be accumulated across three consecutive semesters.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from PIEAS
To be awarded a BS degree, a PIEAS student must complete the prescribed credit hours and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.33 (equivalent to 55%, grade C+). The minimum passing mark in any individual course is 50% (grade C, GP 2.0).
The programme runs a minimum of 8 semesters and a maximum of 12 semesters; the maximum may be extended by one further year only with Board of Faculties approval.

Certificate of Merit and Gold Medal at PIEAS
The Controller of Examinations issues a Certificate of Merit to a graduating student who earns a CGPA of 3.75 or more and who, in addition:
- has not failed any credit course,
- has not repeated any credit course,
- carried the average academic load set by the department, and
- had no discontinuity in study for the degree.
A Certificate of Merit holder who also secures 1st position in the degree programme is awarded the Gold Medal. A student with any semester freeze or drop is treated as having a discontinuity and is not eligible for the Gold Medal.

How transferred credits affect your PIEAS CGPA
Credit transfer at PIEAS is allowed only in special circumstances, such as under student exchange programmes, and requires a minimum grade of B in the course being transferred. Transferred courses count toward the degree's credit-hour requirement, but their grades are not counted in the CGPA and are marked “Transferred” on the transcript.
The maximum credit that may be transferred is 30% of the total degree credit hours, across at most two semesters (up to 15% per semester).

What is the minimum passing grade at PIEAS?
The minimum passing mark in a PIEAS course is 50% (grade C, 2.0 grade points). A score of 45–49% earns a D (1.0 grade point) that counts toward your GPA but must be repeated to reach a C; below 45% is an F and earns no credit.

Does PIEAS use relative grading?
No. PIEAS uses absolute grading — your percentage score maps directly to a fixed letter grade and grade point, with no cohort curve. The percentage bands are shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

When is a PIEAS student placed on probation?
A BS student is placed on probation when their semester GPA falls below 2.33. Being on probation in three consecutive semesters without recovering means the student ceases to be enrolled at PIEAS.

Do A+ and A both give 4.0 at PIEAS?
Yes. On the PIEAS 4.0 scale, both A+ (85% and above) and A (80–84%) carry the maximum 4.0 grade points. The A+ is a recognition band; it does not raise the grade point above 4.0. See the Grade Scale Reference on this page for the full table.

How do you qualify for a Gold Medal at PIEAS?
You must first earn a Certificate of Merit — a CGPA of 3.75 or more with no failed or repeated courses, the department's average load, and no break in study — and then secure 1st position in your degree programme. Any semester freeze or drop counts as a discontinuity and forfeits eligibility.
