Abbottabad University of Science & Technology (AUST) GPA Calculator

Abbottabad University of Science & Technology (AUST) uses an Absolute Grading System: each course is graded against fixed percentage-of-marks bands rather than against the class distribution. Grades run from A+ down to F on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale, in line with HEC's national 4.0-scale equivalence directive.

The minimum passing mark for a course at undergraduate level is 50% (a D grade, 1.00 grade point); a student scoring below 50% in a course fails it. AUST's own regulations state there are no grade-point values other than the ones in its official table, and that raw percentage marks are not reported on transcripts — only the letter grade.

The failing threshold differs by level of study: 0–49% is failing for undergraduate students, while the failing band extends higher for postgraduate work (0–59% for MPhil, 0–64% for PhD). This calculator uses the undergraduate scale.

AUST computes both a Semester GPA and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) using the standard credit-weighted formula:

• GPA = (sum of Course Credit Hours × Grade Point earned, across the semester) ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours.
• CGPA = the same calculation applied cumulatively across all semesters completed.

A W (Withdrawn) grade has no impact on GPA or CGPA. If a withdrawal approval reaches the Controller of Examinations too late, or a student withdraws after the 12th week of the semester, an F is recorded instead of a W and is counted in the GPA.

An undergraduate student whose GPA falls below 2.00 in the first semester (or CGPA below 2.50 for graduate students) is placed on first probation for the following semester. If the CGPA is not raised to at least 2.00 (2.50 for graduate students) by the end of the second semester, the student goes on last probation for the third semester.

A student who fails to clear probation by the end of the third semester is dropped from the department and cannot be re-admitted to the same department. Students who fail to secure a GPA of at least 1.00 (undergraduate) or 2.00 (graduate) in the first or second semester are automatically dropped from the rolls, with one-time re-admission possible on open merit only.

An undergraduate student who has not reached a CGPA of 2.00 by the end of the third semester is given one Special Exam opportunity (within 15 days of result declaration) to attempt up to three failed courses; failing to reach 2.00 even after the special exam results in removal from the department's rolls.

To be awarded a degree, an AUST student must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for a 4-year Bachelor programme, or 2.50 for an MS/MPhil programme, in addition to completing the prescribed credit hours and any programme-specific requirements (project, thesis, internship, lab or field work, as applicable). Every undergraduate student must also complete two weeks of social/community work assigned by the department to be entitled to their degree.

AUST's Chancellor's Gold Medal goes to the student who stands first in a Master's or Bachelor's programme with a CGPA of 4.00 and an A+ grade (90% or above in aggregate), achieved on the first attempt. Gold Medals, Rolls of Honor, and Certificates of Merit for the top three positions in each discipline require a CGPA of at least 3.00.

Only students who pass every course of their degree on the first attempt are eligible for honors — a student who repeats any course is disqualified from top-student honors even if the repeat improves their CGPA into the qualifying range. Ties are broken first by CGPA, then by percentage of marks obtained, then by marks from a preceding degree. Disciplines with fewer than 5 students do not award a class position.

Credit hours can only be transferred between HEC-recognized institutions or internationally recognized universities, on a course-to-course basis. A dedicated Credit Hour Transfer Committee evaluates course-content equivalence for each application, with Vice Chancellor approval (and Advanced Studies and Research Board endorsement for graduate transfers).
