How grading works at SMIU
SMIU assesses coursework out of 100 marks per course. The marks earned are converted into a Numerical Grade (NG), which is then translated into an Alphabetical Grade (AG) carrying a fixed number of grade points — together these make up the university's Grade Point Average (GPA) system.
The full percentage-to-letter-to-grade-point table is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. Two administrative codes exist outside the grade-point scale: I (Incomplete) and W (Withdrawn), neither of which carries grade points.

How SMIU calculates semester GPA and CGPA
SMIU computes both a Semester GPA and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) as a credit-hour-weighted average of grade points:
- Semester GPA = the sum of (credit hours × grade point earned) across a semester's courses, divided by the total credit hours taken that semester.
- CGPA = the sum of (credit hours × grade point earned) across every course taken in every completed semester, divided by the total credit hours taken overall.
Because the formula is credit-hour weighted, a course with more credit hours has a larger effect on the average than a course with fewer.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from SMIU
To complete a degree at SMIU, students must reach a minimum CGPA that depends on their level of study:
- BS (undergraduate) students need a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
- MS / M.Phil students need a higher minimum CGPA of 2.50.

How credit transfer works at SMIU
SMIU accepts a limited number of transfer students each year, and caps how much of a degree can be built from transferred credit:
- A maximum of 50% of courses in a degree are transferable.
- Credits transfer on a course-to-course basis — the course taken elsewhere must be equivalent to a course SMIU actually teaches.
- A course only transfers if the grade earned was at least C for undergraduate students or B for graduate students; lower grades are not accepted for transfer.
- Credit hours may only be transferred between Chartered HEIs (institutions with valid HEC charters).
- A transfer student must still hold regular admission to the undergraduate program and earn at least 50% of their credit hours at SMIU to receive an SMIU degree.
