Jinnah University for Women (JUW) GPA Calculator

Jinnah University for Women (JUW) in Karachi runs a semester system in which every course is marked out of 100, regardless of its credit hours. Students receive two kinds of grades for each course: a numeric mark and a corresponding alphabetic grade point on a 4.00 scale. The conversion from percentage marks to letter grade and grade point is university-wide, applied identically across all four faculties — see the Grade Scale Reference on this page for the exact bands.

To qualify a course a student must pass its assessment heads (mid-term, lab/field work where applicable, and the final examination) both separately and collectively. The minimum passing mark differs by faculty: 60% in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Science and in Business Administration & Commerce/Economics, and 50% in the Faculty of Pharmacy.

A semester Grade Point Average (GPA) is the sum over that semester's courses of (course credit hours × grade point earned), divided by the total credit hours taken that semester. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) applies the same formula across every course taken in the degree — the sum of (credit hours × grade point earned) for all semesters divided by all credit hours attempted.

The CGPA is computed over the full length of the programme: ten semesters for Pharm-D, eight semesters for BS and BBA, and four semesters for Master's programmes. JUW also labels these the Grade Point Ratio (GPR) for a semester and the Cumulative Grade Point Ratio (CGPR) at the end of the degree.

A student in good standing whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 in a semester is placed on academic probation for the next semester. She is removed from probation and returned to good standing on achieving a cumulative GPA of at least 2.2 at the end of the probation semester.

The number of probations a student may accumulate is capped by programme length: three consecutive probations for 3-to-4-year programmes, two for 2-to-2.5-year programmes, and one for 1.5-year programmes. A student on probation must secure a CGPA of 2.5 or above in the next two consecutive semesters (regular or summer) or her registration stands cancelled. A student who cannot maintain the minimum CGPA of 2.0, after using any offered paper chance, is dropped from the programme.

Attendance is a hard gate: at least 75% attendance is required in each course, and a student below that threshold is barred from the practical, mid-term and final examinations and is awarded an 'F' in that subject.

The minimum CGPA required for the award of a degree depends on the faculty:

• Faculties of Social Sciences and Science — CGPA 2.2
• Faculties of Pharmacy, Business Administration and Commerce & Economics, and the department of Visual Studies — CGPA 2.5

A student must also complete all degree requirements within the maximum period allowed for the respective programme.

JUW ties top student honors to a clean record: a student who opts to repeat any course is not eligible for peak student honors or awards, even if she improves and earns an equal or better CGPA. When a course is repeated, only the better grade is counted toward the CGPA total.

JUW considers transfer of credit only for coursework completed at an HEC-recognised institution. Key conditions:

• The course content must match a JUW course to a level of up to a maximum of 80% similarity for the credit to be considered.
• A lower-level course cannot transfer to a higher-level programme (for example, a Bachelor's course does not transfer into a Master's programme).
• The applicant must have secured at least CGPA 2.50/4.0 under the semester system (or 50% under an annual system).
• The course duration must be equal to or longer than the corresponding JUW course.

An Equivalence Committee or subject expert makes the final recommendation; on approval the transcript records the words "Credit Transferred" against the transferred courses.
