Newports Institute of Communications & Economics GPA Calculator

Newports grades each course on a percentage scale, combining a Final Examination (50% of the total), a Midterm Examination (20%), and quizzes, assignments, presentations, reports and performance (30%). The resulting percentage maps to a letter grade running from A+ (85% and above) down to F (below 50%).

Newports' own Student's Guidebook does not publish a grade-point value for any letter grade — there is no A+/A/B-style points column anywhere in its grading policy. Its GPA/CGPA definitions describe multiplying credit hours by "the grade points assigned to grade earned," but that letter-to-point mapping is never printed in the document.

Per Newports' own Student's Guidebook, Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by multiplying the credit hours of each course by the grade points assigned to the grade earned, then dividing by the total credit hours registered that semester. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) sums all earned grade points across the program and divides by the total registered credit hours.

A course withdrawn within the permitted window is awarded a 'W' grade and is not counted toward the final GPA.

The Assessment Committee of a student's academic department may place them on probation for one semester if they are deficient in academic standards to the extent they are at risk of relegation or withdrawal, and a warning is judged an inadequate response. While on probation, a student receives extra coaching and must report progress regularly.

A semester may be declared null and void, and the student relegated, on any of several grounds, including: semester GPA remaining below 2.00 for three consecutive semesters; earning three 'F' grades across their studies (not all in one semester); receiving an 'I' symbol in 50% or more of subjects for three consecutive semesters; 30 or more continuous days of unauthorized absence; enrolling at another institution without notifying Newports; attendance below 75% in two consecutive semesters; or on disciplinary grounds.

Newports requires a minimum CGPA of 2.5 for the award of a degree, applied identically across Undergraduate/Bachelor programs, Graduate/Master programs, and M.Phil/MS programs.

To be considered for a medal at Newports, a graduate must fulfill all of the following: completion of all degree requirements within the normal duration; a CGPA of 3.50 or higher on the 4.00 scale; no F grade anywhere in the transcript; no transfer of credits from another university or institution; and no disciplinary punishment during the degree. Gold Medals go to the top student of each batch and degree program (ties share the medal), and one overall Gold Medal is awarded per convocation based on academics, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students admitted via a program transfer are not eligible for a medal.
