How grading works at Iqra University, Karachi

Iqra University (IU) uses absolute, percentage-based grading on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale. Your semester percentage is matched to a fixed marks band, and each band carries its own grade point — shown in the Grade Scale Reference above.

This is IU's revised grading scheme, effective from Spring Semester 2025 for all newly admitted students across all of IU's campuses (Karachi and Islamabad). Students admitted before Spring 2025 continue under an earlier, coarser 6-band scale not shown here.

The scale tops out at 4.00 (grade A, 90–100%) and bottoms at 0.00 (grade F, below 50%); grades A-, B-, and C- use non-round grade points (3.67, 2.67, and 1.67 respectively) that closely track Pakistan's HEC national grading guidelines, though IU's own marks bands are set independently.

How repeats, withdrawals, and rounding affect your CGPA at Iqra University

If you repeat a course — either to clear an F/W grade or to improve your CGPA — both attempts appear on your transcript, but only the better grade is used in your CGPA. Repeating a course to improve your CGPA (rather than to clear a fail) is only permitted in summer semesters and/or your final year, with Head of Department approval, and makes you ineligible for top student honours and awards even if your improved CGPA would otherwise qualify.

  • A W (Withdrawal) grade is not counted toward your CGPA.
  • An XF grade (fail due to attendance shortage) is likewise excluded from your GPA.
  • Grades earned at another institution and transferred in are excluded from your IU CGPA.

IU's policy is explicit that your CGPA should never be rounded: “The GPA should not be rounded off to any nearest figures. If the system performs any rounding off in the GPA at any level it should be amended.”

Academic probation and promotion at Iqra University

To progress past your first semester, you must achieve a GPA above 0.00 (i.e., avoid failing every course) — falling short can lead to suspension. From your second semester onward:

  • A semester GPA below 2.0 can place you on your first probation.
  • Two consecutive semesters below 2.0 GPA leads to a second academic warning (probation).
  • If your GPA still hasn't recovered to 2.0 after a second warning, you may be expelled.

Separately, a student who fails every subject or scores a 0.00 GPA in their very first semester has their admission terminated immediately, without warning or further probation.

A document inconsistency worth noting: the handbook's revised grading table (effective Spring 2025) carries a marginal note referencing a “Revised Probation Threshold Limit” of 1.70 semester GPA, but the handbook's own academic-promotions section (quoted above) states the threshold as 2.0 and never reconciles the two figures. Both numbers are printed in the same official document; IU has not clarified which applies.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from Iqra University

To be awarded an undergraduate degree, an IU student must complete all required courses and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00 (on the 4.00 scale), in addition to completing the prescribed period of study and passing all required examinations. IU states this floor implements the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan's Uniform Semester Policy guidelines.

IU's policy is explicit that this CGPA is never rounded up to reach the floor: “The GPA should not be rounded off to any nearest figures.”

Gold Medal criteria at Iqra University

IU awards a Gold Medal, program-wise, at the end of each academic batch (covering the two regular Fall and Spring semesters). To qualify, a student must:

  • Secure the highest CGPA in their degree program, with no F grade anywhere in their academic record.
  • Have no disciplinary punishments.
  • Complete the degree within its prescribed time.
  • Hold a minimum CGPA of 3.5.

Transfer students from other universities are excluded from the Gold Medal if they brought in more than 30% of their total credit hours via transfer; inter-campus IU transferees remain eligible. If two or more students tie on CGPA, total marks across the mandatory coursework break the tie — and if the tie still persists, multiple gold medals are awarded. Students who repeat any course (to clear a fail or to improve their CGPA) are separately excluded from top student honours, even if their resulting CGPA would otherwise qualify.

How transfer credit affects your GPA at Iqra University

Iqra University accepts transfer credit only from official transcripts of HEC-recognized (or, for international institutions, nationally accredited) institutions, evaluated at the university's discretion:

  • No credit is given for a grade lower than C+ (2.5 GPA, 67%).
  • Grades earned at another institution are excluded from your IU CGPA — only coursework completed at IU counts toward it.
  • Up to 50% of the courses required for your Bachelor's program can be satisfied via transfer credit.
  • Course content must match an IU course to at least 60% to be considered for transfer.

Credit-transfer applications are not accepted once you've already started your program of study at IU.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Iqra University, Karachi?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Iqra University, Karachi?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Iqra University, Karachi GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from Iqra University?

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 (on IU's 4.00 scale) to graduate, along with completing all required courses and examinations for your program. IU states this floor implements the HEC's Uniform Semester Policy guidelines.

What is the minimum passing grade at Iqra University?

Under IU's revised grading scheme (effective Spring 2025 onwards), any semester percentage below 50% is an F, worth 0.00 grade points. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded for 50–52%, worth 1.00 grade point. See the Grade Scale Reference on this page for the full band-to-grade-point table.

If I repeat a course at Iqra University, which grade counts?

Both attempts show on your transcript, but only the better grade is used in your CGPA. Repeating a course to improve your CGPA (rather than to clear an F/W) is only allowed in summer semesters and/or your final year, subject to Head of Department approval — and it makes you ineligible for top student honours and awards, even if your resulting CGPA would otherwise qualify.

When is an Iqra University student placed on academic probation?

A semester GPA below 2.0 can place you on your first probation; two consecutive semesters below 2.0 leads to a second academic warning, and failing to recover to 2.0 GPA afterward can result in expulsion. (Note: the handbook's revised grading table separately references a “1.70” probation threshold that is never reconciled with this 2.0 figure elsewhere in the document — see the Academic Standing section above.)

What CGPA do you need for a Gold Medal at Iqra University?

You need a minimum CGPA of 3.5, the highest CGPA in your degree program's batch, no F grade on your record, and no disciplinary punishments. Students who repeated any course, or who transferred in more than 30% of their credit hours from another university, are not eligible.
