University of the Punjab (PU) GPA Calculator

The University of the Punjab uses absolute grading on a 0.00–4.00 scale: your percentage in a course is matched against a fixed marks band, and each band carries one fixed grade point. Grades are not curved against your class, so your result depends only on your own marks. The bands and their grade points are listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

Two rules shape how your course percentage is reached before any grade is assigned:

• A course mark is built from sessional activities (25%), the mid term examination (35%) and the final term examination (40%). Appearing in both examinations and completing the sessional work is mandatory.
• Any fraction of a mark is counted as a full mark — the regulations give 64.1 and 64.9 as examples that are both shown as 65. The worked example in the rules takes a total of 71.4, rounds it to 72, and awards a B worth 3.00 grade points.

To pass a course you must obtain at least a D grade (50% marks), counted cumulatively across the mid term, final term and sessional activities. Below 50%, or absent, is an F worth 0.00. The maximum possible GPA is 4.00, and letter grades are used only to represent individual courses — never the GPA or CGPA itself.

Both averages are weighted by credit hours, so a 4-credit course moves your average twice as much as a 2-credit one.

• Semester GPA — multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add the results, then divide by the total credit hours taken that semester.
• CGPA — the same weighted average, taken across every course you have enrolled in and been evaluated for. The regulations are explicit that the “overall CGPA should be directly computed from the individual courses GPs and not from the GPAs of semester”, so averaging your semester GPAs together will give you the wrong figure.

What counts and what does not:

• A course graded F counts as zero grade points in the semester average — it is not skipped.
• W (withdrawal) and FW (forced withdrawal) are not counted in the GPA or CGPA at all. FW is still shown on the final transcript; W is not.
• An I (incomplete) is awarded when you miss an examination, and must be cleared through a special examination within one month — otherwise zero marks are recorded for that examination.
• When you repeat a course you have already taken, the better of the two grades is the one used in the CGPA.

Punjab University also reports an Obtained Percent Marks (OPM) figure, which is a separate credit-weighted average of your raw marks — it is calculated independently of your CGPA, not derived from it. For medals and distinctions the CGPA is reported to two decimal places.

Punjab University reviews your standing every semester against a 2.00 threshold, and the rule that applies depends on how far into the degree you are:

• First semester — promoted on a GPA above 2.00; placed on probation with a GPA from 1.50 up to 2.00; dropped below 1.50.
• Second semester onwards — promoted on a CGPA above 2.00; placed on probation with a CGPA from 1.70 up to 2.00; dropped below 1.70.

Falling below the drop threshold means being automatically struck off the rolls. Probation is allowed twice in the entire programme; a student who has used both probations and still has not reached a CGPA of 2.00 is dropped and cannot be re-admitted to a programme at the same level in any department of the university.

Two details catch students out. First, the regulations state that improving your grades in a semester where you were on probation does not remove the probation from your count — the probation still counts against your limit of two. Second, repeating is not always optional: an F must be repeated, and a D must be repeated whenever your CGPA is below the minimum requirement, in both cases with the immediate junior session.

Attendance can also cost you a course. Falling below 75% attendance in a course means being awarded FW (forced withdrawal) and repeating that course when it is next offered. The FW itself is not counted towards your GPA or CGPA, but it does appear on your final transcript.

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to be awarded a 4-year or 5-year Bachelors degree at Punjab University. The regulations set out four requirements that must all be met:

• Earn the minimum required credit hours within the allowed degree duration — 120 credit hours for a 4-year BS and 160 for a 5-year BS.
• Secure at least a D grade in every course. A single uncleared F blocks the degree regardless of your CGPA.
• Have not used more than two probations across the entire programme.
• Obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.00, which must be held in the final semester.

There is one safety valve. A student who has completed all courses, was never required to repeat any of them, and still finishes below 2.00 may be allowed to repeat a maximum of 16 credit hours of D or C− graded courses purely to lift the CGPA to 2.00. If that still falls short, the degree is not awarded and the student is removed from the rolls.

Punjab University awards three kinds of distinction — the Gold Medal, the roll of honour and merit positions — and eligibility is a CGPA threshold combined with a strict first-attempt rule.

• A CGPA of 3.70 or above makes a student eligible for any distinction.
• Every individual course must have been passed at B− grade or better, in the first attempt.
• All examinations must have been passed in the first attempt with your own session — not in a resit, repeat or special examination.
• No distinction is awarded in a discipline where the class has fewer than 5 students, or where the result was not declared within the minimum prescribed time for the degree.

Several situations disqualify a student outright: passing any examination with a junior session debars you from the roll of honour, merit certificates and gold medals, and freezing a semester debars you from any distinction. Students who did not submit a required thesis are also debarred, even with an approved extension.

A class may receive a maximum of three merit gold medals. Because the CGPA is reported to two decimal places, ties are broken by extending the calculated CGPA to five decimal places; if the tie survives that, the Obtained Percent Marks figure to five decimal places decides it. Merit positions for the top 5 students form part of the first result notification.

The rule that decides most cases is a grade floor: “No credit hour of a course will be transferred if the grade is less than ‘C’.” A course passed at C− or D travels with you on your old transcript but earns you nothing at Punjab University.

• Credits earned at a previous institution may be transferred subject to similarity or equivalence with the corresponding Punjab University courses, under the university's Migration Regulations.
• Students may also migrate between departments of the university by mutual consent of both heads, provided they meet the merit requirements. Migration is not allowed during the first year of any programme.
• Credits earned on an exchange programme can be transferred with prior departmental permission, capped at one semester's duration, and only from an HEC-recognised, accredited or foreign higher education institution.
• A student must have earned a minimum of 60 credit hours (of the 124–136 total for a 3.5–4 year Bachelors) or 75 of 160 for a 5-year Bachelors at the department that will award the degree.

Any credit hours exempted or transferred are recorded on the back of your final transcript.
