How Grades Appear on Your Transcript

Course marks are converted into a Letter Grade (LG) and Grade Point (GP) as shown above. Continuous-assessment marks (attendance, assignments, quizzes) may remain fractional, but the total mark for each course is rounded to a whole number before conversion. A student absent from a course's Semester Final Examination receives no Grade Point for that course. Official transcripts and grade sheets show only the Letter Grade and Grade Point for each course — the underlying numeric marks are not printed.

GPA/CGPA Formula and Grade Improvement

Semester GPA = (sum of Credit × Grade Point across that semester's courses) ÷ total credits attempted that semester. CGPA is the same calculation carried cumulatively across all completed semesters.

  • A student who earns below Grade Point 3.00 (below a 'B') in a theoretical course, up to the 4th Year 1st Semester, may retake that course's Semester Final Examination once, with the next available batch, to try to improve the grade.
  • If the improvement attempt scores lower than the original, the original grade stands.
  • In any improvement, supplementary, or re-take examination, a student can be awarded at most a 'B+' (Grade Point 3.25) for that course, even if the raw marks would earn more — effective from the 2016-17 academic session.

Promotion and Continuation Requirements

Promotion between years requires a minimum CGPA: 2.00 (Letter Grade D) to move from 1st Year to 2nd Year, and 2.25 (Letter Grade C) to move from 2nd Year to 3rd Year and from 3rd Year to 4th Year. A student is not promoted if they miss at least one course of any Semester Final Examination, even with the required CGPA.

A student is dropped from the programme if: after two re-admissions they still fail to earn the CGPA required for promotion; they cannot complete the programme within six academic years (12 semesters) of first admission; or an 'F' grade remains in any course after appearing at the Supplementary Examination.

Degree Completion Requirements

To receive the Bachelor degree, a student must earn the required 125 total credit points, achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.25, and complete the programme within six academic years of first admission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at JnU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at JnU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Jagannath University (JnU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
