Computing the GPA

The grade point average is computed by multiplying the quality points earned by the credit hours of each course and dividing the total quality points earned by the total credit hours attempted.

  • Failing grades (F) are included in the GPA calculation.
  • Withdrawals (W) are not used in GPA calculations.
  • Incomplete grades (I) are not factored into the GPA until a letter grade is recorded.
  • A "WF" (Withdrawal Failing, after the regular withdrawal period has ended) counts in the student's GPA.
  • When a course is repeated at EWU, only the final passing grade is computed in the institutional GPA; the original grade remains on the transcript. When repeated elsewhere, the course requirement is satisfied but the institutional GPA is unaffected.

Academic Warning, Probation, Suspension, and Dismissal

A student who fails to achieve a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 receives a letter of academic warning. A student who fails to attain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is placed on academic probation the second semester after falling below 2.0; while on probation a student may not enroll for more than 12 semester hours, must earn at least a 'C' in each course taken, and may not participate in extra-curricular activities.

A student who fails to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress after one semester of probation is placed on academic suspension for one semester; readmission requires approval and is not automatic. A dismissed student is ineligible to obtain a degree from EWU or continue enrollment.

Good Standing requires a term and cumulative GPA above 2.00 and completion of 75% of attempted semester credit hours with a grade other than F, NP, NC, I, AW, W, WP, WF, or FN. Post-baccalaureate/teacher-certification students must earn a 2.50 GPA or are automatically dismissed.

Graduation Requirements

Students must satisfy the minimum completion of at least 120 semester credit hours with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, including: completion of the last 30 semester credit hours at EWU; a minimum course grade of C in each core and major-required course; at least 38 credit hours of General Education; passing final course exams, competency tests, and Major Field Exams; and a minimum of 20 community service/service-learning hours per semester enrolled.

Academic Honors

Graduation honors require at least 30 credit hours of graded coursework at EWU and are conferred by cumulative GPA:

HonorGPA
Summa Cum Laude3.8 - 4.0
Magna Cum Laude3.5 - 3.7
Cum Laude3.2 - 3.4
Honors3.0 - 3.1

The GPA is not rounded up when determining graduation honors (e.g. 3.499 does not qualify as 3.500).

Each semester, the Registrar recognizes students with a 4.0 GPA on the President's List, 3.5-3.9 on the Provost's List, and 3.0-3.4 (without a D, F, or I) on the Honor Roll.

Transfer and Transient Credit

Grades and GPA are not transferred from other institutions — only credits for equivalent courses are reflected on a student's academic transcript. Transfer applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on all coursework attempted for graduate transfer admission; undergraduate transfer students and EWU students with postsecondary work elsewhere must have an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher (counting EWU and transferable work) to be considered for graduation honors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at EWU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at EWU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Edward Waters University (EWU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
