How grading works at UofL
The University of Louisville awards letter grades that are translated into quality points to determine a grade point average. Instructors may use a full “plus/minus” system, so grades run from A+ down through D- before reaching F. See the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact quality-point value attached to each grade.
The grade A+ is given for extraordinary work and appears on your transcript with the “plus” qualification — but it does not award any additional quality points beyond a regular A.
The grade F means not passing. It earns no semester hours toward graduation and no quality points, but the semester hours you attempted still count toward your point standing — so an F pulls your GPA down rather than simply being ignored.

How UofL calculates your GPA
Your undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) is the total number of quality points you have earned divided by the total number of semester hours you attempted with earned grades.
- Courses numbered below the 100 level are not used in your earned hours or UGPA calculation.
- Grades and quality points earned at other institutions are not incorporated into your UGPA.
- Missing grades automatically change to a failing grade one year after the semester in which the course was taken.
A separate program GPA is also calculated, using all 200-level-and-above courses that carry your degree program's course index. If your program has fewer than 30 credit hours of such 200+ level courses (for example, some interdisciplinary, general studies, or individualized studies degrees), your program GPA is calculated from your 300-level-and-above coursework instead. Courses for which you were awarded transfer credit are not included in this calculation. Your program GPA is used to determine accolades and whether you have satisfied degree requirements.

How transfer credit affects your UofL GPA
Grades and quality points you earned at another institution are not incorporated into your UGPA at the University of Louisville. The same applies to your program GPA: courses for which you were awarded transfer credit are excluded from that calculation as well. Transfer coursework can count toward your credit hours and degree requirements, but the grades themselves never enter your UofL grade point average.

Which UofL grades don't count toward your GPA?
UofL's catalog lists these as grades that “do not enter into the point standing”:
- AU — Audit
- I — Incomplete Work
- NC — No Credit
- P — Passing (pass/no-credit basis)
- S and U — Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory
- W — Withdrew
- X — No Basis for Grade (graduate-level courses only)
A P is awarded for achievement equivalent to an A–D standard and still earns semester hours toward graduation; it just carries no quality points. An S similarly earns semester hours, though those hours may not count toward the minimum required for graduation or a degree.

Does UofL calculate a separate GPA for your major?
