Nanyang Technological University (NTU) GPA Calculator

NTU records your performance in each course as a letter grade on the Grade Point Average (GPA) system. Letter grades run from A+ down to F, each carrying a fixed grade point on a 0.00–5.00 scale — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the full table. A+ and A both carry the same grade point, 5.00 — A+ does not exceed the 5.00 ceiling.

Besides the eleven letter grades, NTU uses several non-letter notations that carry no grade point and are not included in your CGPA: Pass/Fail-only courses (marked with an asterisk), In Progress (IP), Absent with valid reasons (LOA), Exempted (EX), Transfer Credits (TC), Pass (P), and No Record (NR).

Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the credit-weighted average of every letter-graded course you've attempted, including failed courses: each course's grade point is multiplied by its Academic Units (AU), summed across all your semesters, and divided by your total AU attempted.

• Only letter-graded courses (A+ through F) count toward your CGPA.
• Courses graded Pass/Fail, courses where you invoked the Flexible Grading Option (FGO), courses where you were absent with a valid reason (LOA), and courses you were exempted from (EX) or that are still in progress (IP) are all excluded from your CGPA.
• Your Year GPA (YGPA) uses the same formula, restricted to the two semesters of one academic year (Special Term courses excluded).

The Flexible Grading Option (FGO) lets you convert eligible courses' earned letter grades to Pass (for A, B, C, D) or No Record (for F) after results are released, removing them from your CGPA. FGO declarations are irrevocable and subject to an AU quota (up to 21–24 AU depending on your programme); it isn't available to LKCMedicine students, exchange students, or non-graduating students.

NTU requires a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for satisfactory academic standing in any given semester. Falling short triggers a sequence of reviews:

• Academic Warning — CGPA below 2.00 in any semester.
• Academic Probation — CGPA below 2.00 for a second consecutive semester.
• Academic Termination — CGPA below 2.00 for a third consecutive semester, or failure to graduate by your maximum candidature period. A letter of termination is issued; you may appeal once per candidature, on grounds of extenuating circumstances, within 2 weeks of results release or before the next semester starts, whichever is earlier.

Students in the Accelerated Bachelor's Programme must maintain a minimum CGPA of 4.00 to remain in the programme.

To graduate, you need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at the end of your final semester, plus the full Academic Unit (AU) requirement for your programme, met within your programme's minimum-to-maximum candidature period and minimum residential period.

A share of your AU must come from letter-graded courses: 52 AU for 3-year programmes and 69 AU for 4-year programmes (covering Core, Major Prescribed Electives, Broadening and Deepening Electives, and Interdisciplinary Collaborative Core courses). Double-degree students must meet this letter-graded minimum separately for each degree. A Second Major requires at least 18 AU of letter-graded courses; a Minor requires at least 9 AU.

Your degree classification depends on your final CGPA:

• 4.50–5.00 — Honours (Highest Distinction)
• 4.00–4.49 — Honours (Distinction)
• 3.50–3.99 — Honours (Merit)
• 3.00–3.49 — Honours
• 2.00–2.99 — Pass

Some colleges set extra requirements for the top two Honours tiers: College of Engineering and College of Computing and Data Science students need a CGPA of 4.50 and at least a 'B+' in their Final Year Project (FYP) for Highest Distinction; College of Science students need a CGPA of 4.50 and at least an 'A-' FYP grade for Highest Distinction, or 4.00 CGPA and a Pass FYP grade for Distinction. Humanities and Social Sciences students who opt out of the FYP aren't eligible for either distinction tier.

The Dean's List recognizes the top 5% of each semester's cohort, subject to a minimum Semester GPA (SGPA) of 4.50 and a minimum letter-graded course load (12 AU full-time / 6 AU part-time for single-degree students; 12 AU total plus 9 AU per degree for double-degree students). Students with academic or disciplinary misconduct records are not eligible.

With your School Chair's approval, you can transfer Academic Units (AU) earned at another university — including on exchange — toward your NTU degree requirements. These transferred grades and credits are not included in your CGPA for degree classification (the one exception is the dual NTU–Shanghai Jiao Tong University degree), though the AU still counts toward your graduation requirement.

If you completed courses at another institution before joining NTU, you can apply for exemption from equivalent NTU courses — submit your application to your School within your first semester. Only credits and qualifications earned within the last 5 years are considered, credits already counted toward one degree cannot transfer to another degree at the same academic level, and partial credit transfer is not allowed.
