National University of Singapore (NUS) GPA Calculator

NUS grades courses on letter grades, each carrying a fixed grade point on a 0.00–5.00 scale. For the current general scheme (2021/2022 to present, all faculties/schools except Law, Dentistry and Medicine):

• A+ and A — 5.00 (A+ carries no extra points over A — both are the scale ceiling)
• A- — 4.50
• B+ — 4.00
• B — 3.50
• B- — 3.00
• C+ — 2.50
• C — 2.00
• D+ — 1.50
• D — 1.00
• F — 0.00

NUS also awards non-GPA markers that carry no grade point and are not computed into your average: S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), CS/CU (Completed Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory), IC (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), AUD (Audit), EXE (Exempted), W (Withdrawn) and WU (Withdrawal from University).

Law, Dentistry and Medicine use separate scales specific to those professional programmes; this calculator covers the general scheme used across NUS's other faculties and schools.

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average grade point of all your courses: the sum of (grade point × course units), divided by your total units attempted. GPA was introduced for students admitted from Academic Year 1998/1999 onwards.

If you studied at NUS before August 2023, you'll know this figure as your Cumulative Average Point (CAP) — NUS renamed the term to GPA effective 1 August 2023 to align with international terminology. It's the same calculation on the same 0.00–5.00 scale; nothing about how the number itself is worked out changed.

One unit (formerly a “Modular Credit”/MC) represents about 2.5 hours of weekly study and preparation, so a 4-unit course represents roughly 10 hours of work a week.

NUS also runs a Grade-Free Scheme: undergraduates admitted from AY2014/2015 could exercise a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option on up to 32 units, later extended (for students admitted from AY2016/2017) to cover their entire first year. If you exercise the S/U option on a course, the letter grade is not shown on your transcript and is not computed into your GPA — you get an 'S' for a D grade or above, or a 'U' for an F, and only 'S' earns you credit toward your degree.

For students admitted from AY2012/2013 onwards (current), the Bachelor's Degree Classification floor is:

• Pass with Merit — GPA 3.00 and above
• Pass — GPA 2.00–2.99

For students admitted prior to AY2012/2013, the equivalent floor was:

• Pass with Merit — GPA 3.20 and above
• Pass — GPA 2.00–3.19
• Fail — below GPA 2.00

These thresholds are for the 120-unit Bachelor's degree track; a 160-unit Honours programme is assessed against the Honours Degree Classification instead (see below).

For 160-unit Honours programmes, students admitted from AY2012/2013 onwards are classified as follows:

• Honours (Highest Distinction) — GPA 4.50 and above
• Honours (Distinction) — GPA 4.00–4.49
• Honours (Merit) — GPA 3.50–3.99
• Honours — GPA 3.00–3.49
• Pass — GPA 2.00–2.99

Students admitted prior to AY2012/2013 were classified under the older scheme instead:

• First Class Honours — GPA 4.50 and above, plus at least an A- in the Honours thesis/project
• Second Class Honours, Upper Division — GPA 4.00–4.49
• Second Class Honours, Lower Division — GPA 3.50–3.99
• Third Class Honours — GPA 3.20–3.49
• Pass — GPA 2.00–3.19

Under the older scheme, a GPA of 4.50 or above with a B+ or lower in the Honours thesis/project (or no completed thesis) was awarded Second Class Upper Honours instead of First Class.
