How grading works at Ngee Ann Polytechnic
Ngee Ann Polytechnic grades each module on a 4.0-point letter scale. Students are assessed on a mix of continuous assessment (daily work, projects, tests) and, for examinable modules, coursework plus a final examination.
The grade points are:
- AD (Distinction) – 4.0
- A+ (Excellent) – 4.0
- A (Excellent) – 4.0
- B+ (Very good) – 3.5
- B (Very good) – 3.0
- C+ (Good) – 2.5
- C (Good) – 2.0
- D+ (Pass) – 1.5
- D (Pass) – 1.0
- F (Fail) – 0
Two further outcomes carry no grade point and are not counted toward GPA: PM (Pass with Merit) and PX (Pass, for modules graded on a Pass/Fail basis only).
Distinction (AD) is capped: NP awards it to around 5% of the students who sit each module, though the actual cutoff mark applies equally to every candidate who reaches it, regardless of how many candidates that turns out to be.

How your Current GPA is calculated at Ngee Ann Polytechnic
NP's Grade Point Average (GPA) measures your academic standing and is calculated from the graded modules you took in a semester:
Current GPA = Sum of (Credit Units × Grade Points) ÷ Total current-semester credit units (graded modules)
Non-graded modules – those marked PM or PX – are excluded from the calculation entirely, along with their credit units.
Worked example from NP's own page: a student takes six modules in a semester. Five are graded (AD, A, B, C+, and F) and one (PX) is non-graded. The graded modules contribute 16 + 20 + 15 + 10 + 0 = 61 grade points across 4 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 2 = 20 credit units, giving a Current GPA of 61 ÷ 20 = 3.05 — even though the student failed one module (grade F) that semester.

Does Ngee Ann Polytechnic use a 4.0 GPA scale?
Yes. NP grades modules on a 4.0-point scale, from F (0) up to A, A+, and AD/Distinction (all 4.0). Your Current GPA is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned on graded modules in a semester – Pass/Fail-only outcomes (PM, PX) carry no grade point and are excluded from the calculation.

What is a Distinction (AD) grade at Ngee Ann Polytechnic?
Distinction (AD) is NP's top grade, worth the same 4.0 grade points as A+ and A. NP aims to award it to around 5% of the students who sit each module, though the cutoff mark that earns a Distinction applies equally to every candidate who reaches it, whatever the resulting proportion turns out to be.
