Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) grades each learning unit with a letter grade and an attached grade point, on a 4-point scale.

• DIST (Distinction, awarded by the Assessment Board) — 4.0
• A — marks >= 80% — 4.0
• B+ — 75% to < 80% — 3.5
• B — 70% to < 75% — 3.0
• C+ — 65% to < 70% — 2.5
• C — 60% to < 65% — 2.0
• D+ — 55% to < 60% — 1.5
• D — 50% to < 55% — 1.0
• NGP (Non-graded Pass) — 1.0
• F — marks < 50% — 0.0

To be eligible for a Learning Unit Distinction (DIST), you must have passed the learning unit with a Grade A on your first attempt; the number of distinctions awarded per learning unit is capped at no more than the top 5% of the students taking it.

Additional transcript notations that carry no grade point: P (Pass, for learning units graded Pass/Fail), CP (Completed), NCP (Not Completed), SP (Supplementary Pass), SF (Supplementary Fail), AEG (Aegrotat Pass, on special medical grounds), AUD (Audited), DEF (Grading deferred), EX (Learning Unit Exemption), and WDC/WDL (Withdrawn from course / from a learning unit). A Debarred outcome is recorded with a grade point of 0.0.

Your GPA is computed using this formula:

GPA = Σ (Learning Unit Grade Point × Learning Unit Credit Value) / Σ (Learning Unit Credit Value) — including only learning units that carry a grade point.

If you are in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), a separate PFP GPA is computed and used as an important criterion for posting to your desired diploma course after completing the programme. Your PFP GPA is not carried over to your diploma GPA.

• Attendance: if your attendance in a full-time PFP, common-entry, or diploma learning unit drops below 75%, your grade in that unit is capped at “D” (50 marks), a 1.0 grade point, if you pass the unit.
• Candidature: you are allowed a maximum of twice the normal course duration, or one additional year, whichever is longer, to complete your course of study. PFP is designed to be completed within one academic year, with a maximum PFP candidature of two years.
• Repeating a learning unit: if you fail a core learning unit for the first time, you must repeat it. If you fail a prescribed or complementary elective, you may repeat it or register for another one, up to a maximum of two repeats.
• Withdrawal from a learning unit: allowed for valid and acceptable reasons, but only up to week 8, day 5 of the semester.
• Removal from course of study: you can be removed if you repeat and fail a core learning unit, or obtain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 0.8 for two consecutive semesters.
• Absence from assessment: being absent from any assessment, including an examination, without a valid and acceptable reason is deemed a sat-and-failed attempt.
• Appeal for review: you may appeal for a review of your assessment results within three working days of results release, for an administrative fee of $26.75 per learning unit — refunded only if the appeal succeeds.

You must meet all requirements for graduation to be awarded your diploma.

• Diploma with Merit (DWM): awarded to the top graduates of each diploma course who have consistently shown outstanding performance throughout their course of study. To be eligible, you must be in the top 10% of the graduating cohort for your diploma course, without failing any modules during your course of study. Awardees are selected by the Assessment Board.
• Director's List: top students who excel academically in the semester in a full-time diploma are placed on the Director's List. To be eligible, you must be in the top 15% of your cohort for the semester, carrying a full study load (or at least 80% of a full study load if granted credit transfer), and without failing any modules that semester.
• Learning Unit Distinction (DIST): awarded for passing a learning unit with a Grade A on your first attempt, capped at no more than the top 5% of the students taking that learning unit.

Full credit is earned when you pass a learning unit. If you have sufficient and acceptable evidence of relevant previous study and/or training, you may be given credit transfer for appropriate learning units.
