Non-Letter Grade Notations

Alongside the standard A-F letter grades, JJC's catalog lists several notations that do not carry a counted quality-point value:

  • I (Incomplete) — not calculated into the GPA until a final grade is assigned; for financial aid recipients it is temporarily treated as an F until then.
  • PR (Credit by Proficiency) and P (Pass) — awarded without a counted quality-point value; no credit course may be taken on a pass/fail basis.
  • W (Withdrawal) and L (Audit) — administrative statuses rather than graded outcomes; no grade is assigned for an audited (L) course.

How GPA Is Calculated

Semester GPA is computed by multiplying the credit hours of each course by the quality points of the grade earned, summing the results, and dividing by the total credits attempted.

When a course is repeated, the higher of the two grades is used to compute the GPA; both grades remain on the permanent record, though some transfer institutions average both grades instead.

Academic Standards of Progress

Students falling below good academic standing are placed into progressive categories: Academic Caution, Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, and Academic Dismissal. Minimum GPA required for good standing depends on credit hours earned:

Credit Hours EarnedMinimum GPA
0-121.75 cumulative or 2.0 semester
13-321.85 cumulative or 2.0 semester
33-481.95 cumulative or 2.0 semester
49 and above2.0 cumulative or semester

Students suspended or dismissed for GPA reasons may appeal to the Academic Standards of Progress Appeal Committee.

GPA Requirements for Graduation

An associate degree requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (2.75 for the SS220 Human Services Generalist AAS degree). A certificate of achievement, completion, or occupational certificate requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in the area of concentration.

Students whose GPA falls below the minimum required for a degree may apply for a Scholastic Review, which allows courses not required for the degree or certificate to be excluded from the GPA calculation for graduation purposes (the courses remain on the transcript and in the overall JJC GPA).

Honor Rolls and Phi Theta Kappa

Students completing six or more credit hours in a semester are recognized on three honor rolls based on semester GPA:

  • Roll of Excellence — GPA 3.75-4.0
  • Roll of Honor — GPA 3.50-3.74
  • Roll of Merit — GPA 3.0-3.49

Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, requires a minimum GPA of 3.5 and 12 completed hours of 100-level or higher coursework applicable to an associate degree.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at JJC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at JJC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Joliet Junior College (JJC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
