Montana State University Billings (MSUB) GPA Calculator

Alongside letter grades, MSU Billings uses several symbols that do not carry a grade-point value and are not counted in the GPA: I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal without penalty), N (No credit/Audit), and T (graduate work in progress). Under the Pass/No Pass grading mode, P (Pass) is awarded for work equivalent to A, B, or C, and X (No Pass) for work equivalent to D or F; neither affects overall GPA, though P credits count toward graduation. An unresolved Incomplete converts automatically to an F once the allotted time has passed.

Grade points are earned by multiplying a course's credit hours by the grade-point value of the grade received; the GPA is the sum of grade points earned divided by the total credits attempted.

Students may take up to 20 semester credit hours of coursework as Pass/No Pass toward graduation; credits earned by challenge exam, experiential learning, or internship do not count toward that 20-credit limit. If a course is repeated and a passing grade is earned, only the last grade counts toward the GPA, though the credits are counted only once toward graduation.

Students are in good standing at MSU Billings as long as they maintain a 2.00 cumulative institutional GPA. Full-time students (12 or more credits attempted) are placed on academic warning the first time their cumulative institutional GPA falls below 2.00, and are suspended for one academic semester (Fall or Spring) if they fail to reach a 2.00 GPA in the following semester. Part-time students are placed on academic warning after attempting 10 overall cumulative credits without a 2.00 cumulative or term institutional GPA, and suspended after attempting 30 such credits without meeting that GPA.

A minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average is generally required across all courses attempted at MSU Billings, the academic major, and the academic minor. Some programs require a higher floor: BA/BS Teaching Options and the Bachelor of Science in Education require a minimum 2.65 GPA. Bachelor's degrees require a minimum of 120 semester credits, with at least 30 credits and satisfactory completion of all degree requirements earned in residence at MSU Billings, and at least 36 credits in upper-division (300-level or above) coursework.

Bachelor's degree candidates may graduate with academic honors based on their entire undergraduate GPA, including transfer work: cum laude (3.50–3.74), magna cum laude (3.75–3.99), or summa cum laude (4.00). Associate degree and certificate recipients instead receive Honors (3.50–3.74) or High Honors (3.75–4.00). Each semester, the University also publishes an honor roll for undergraduates earning 12 or more non-Pass/No-Pass credits with a semester GPA of 3.50 or better.

MSU Billings accepts college-level coursework from institutions accredited by the recognized regional and national accrediting agencies listed in its catalog toward associate or baccalaureate degree requirements. Students transferring from institutions in pre-approval accreditation status must first earn at least 20 credits at MSU Billings with a minimum 2.0 institutional GPA before credits from the former institution are considered for acceptance. International coursework, except where English is the language of instruction, may require evaluation by a foreign credential evaluation company.
