Grading System Notes
Grades of P (Pass), NP (Fail, pass/fail course), AU (Audit, no credit), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawn), and IP (In Progress) carry no quality-point value and are not counted in the GPA. A faculty member may choose not to differentiate grades using the plus/minus system for any particular course.
A student who receives an Incomplete (I) must resolve it by the midterm of the following semester or it automatically converts to F.

How the Cumulative GPA Is Calculated
Cumulative GPA is calculated by dividing the number of quality grade points earned by the number of credits attempted. Only coursework taken at a baccalaureate school or college of the Main Campus counts toward the quality grade-point system; courses transferred in from other institutions do not affect the cumulative GPA.
When a course is repeated, the earlier grade stays on the transcript but is excluded from the cumulative average; only the later grade counts for credit and quality points, even if it is lower.

Minimum GPA for Good Standing
To remain in good academic standing, students must meet a minimum cumulative GPA that rises with credits completed: 1.70 at 15.5 or fewer semester hours, 1.80 at 16-30.5, 1.90 at 31-60.5, and 2.00 at 61 or more. Falling below the applicable minimum, or failing nine or more credits in one semester, are grounds for dismissal for academic failure. Widener has no formal probationary status; students below standard may instead have their course load reduced until a 2.00 cumulative GPA is restored.

Transfer Credit and GPA
A minimum grade of C is required for a course to transfer to Widener. Transferred courses carry no quality-point value and do not affect the student's cumulative GPA at Widener. After matriculation, students may not take more than nine credits at other institutions without prior approval from the Associate Provost for Student Success.
