Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) GPA Calculator

Minnesota State Mankato grades on a 0.00–4.00 scale using a full plus/minus letter system from A+ through D-, in roughly .33-point increments (A+ and A both = 4.00, down to D- = 0.67), plus F = 0.00. A+ is awarded but capped at parity with a plain A — it does not earn a higher value than 4.00 on the four-point scale.

Faculty choose whether a course section uses +/- grading; if a course has multiple sections in a term, either all sections use +/- or none do.

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points earned by total credit hours attempted on a regular grade basis. For example, 102 quality points over 48 credits gives a GPA of 2.125.

Only A, B, C, D (with +/- variants) and F count toward the GPA. Pass/No Credit (P/NC), Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), Audit (AU), Withdrawal (W), and the placeholder grade Z are not counted in the GPA, even though the university's own quality-point table lists them alongside the graded rows.

Course repeats: when a course is retaken, only the higher grade is used in the GPA calculation. Undergraduates may not register for a 4th attempt at the same course without an approved Course Repeat Appeal, submitted at least three weeks before the course begins. Graduate courses may be repeated, but the credit counts toward the degree only once — though every grade earned still factors into the GPA.

Undergraduates must maintain a Minnesota State Mankato ("local") cumulative GPA of at least 1.7 for 0–30 attempted credits, 1.85 for 31–59 credits, and 2.0 for 60+ credits, along with a cumulative credit completion rate of at least 66.67%.

Falling short for one term results in Academic Warning. A second consecutive term below standard results in Academic Suspension (a minimum one-year, three-consecutive-term absence). Suspended students who meet a term GPA of 2.5+ and a 66.67%+ completion rate may instead continue on Academic Probation.

A baccalaureate degree requires at least 120 credit hours (some programs require more) and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, counting both Mankato coursework and accepted transfer credit. An Associate of Arts degree requires at least 60 credit hours and the same 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

No more than 25% of baccalaureate degree credits (15 credit hours for an AA) may be Pass/No Credit. At least 30 credit hours (20 for an AA) must be earned in residence at Mankato, and all degree requirements must be completed under a single undergraduate catalog spanning no more than six academic years.

Graduating with a baccalaureate or Associate of Arts degree, students qualify for Latin honors by cumulative GPA (including transfer credit): Cum Laude (3.40), Magna Cum Laude (3.60), and Summa Cum Laude (3.80). The official transcript carries the honors designation based on all work completed at the University.

Unlike many universities, Minnesota State Mankato's graduation GPA calculation is not limited to Mankato coursework: the required cumulative 2.0 GPA for both baccalaureate and Associate of Arts degrees is figured "including all course credits completed at Minnesota State Mankato and all course credits transferred and accepted from other post-secondary higher education institutions." Accepted transfer credits are also counted toward the credit-hour range used to set a student's academic-standing GPA threshold.
