Emory College grades on an A to F letter scale with plus/minus steps — but not every step exists. Emory awards A-, B+/B/B-, C+/C/C-, and D+/D, plus a plain A and a plain F. There is no A+ and no D- anywhere in the system. See the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact quality-point value attached to each grade.

Emory also offers a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option for some courses: S earns academic credit but no quality points, and U earns neither. Grades of IF (failure to finish an Incomplete) and WF (withdrawal failing) are counted the same as an F once they are computed into your GPA.

Individual instructors set the scale and criteria that turn coursework into a letter grade in their own course, so grading standards can vary between courses — that is separate from the fixed quality-point value each final letter grade is worth once assigned.

Faculty may correct a grade within one year of assigning it; after that, a change requires approval from the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.

Your Emory GPA is a quality-point average: each letter grade you earn is worth a fixed number of quality points per semester hour of credit, and your GPA is the total quality points divided by the total graded hours.

Some grades are left out of the calculation entirely: W (withdrawal without penalty), WU (unsatisfactory withdrawal), S (Satisfactory), and U (Unsatisfactory) never count toward your GPA. By contrast, IF and WF do count — they are computed exactly as an F.

Repeating a course. You may not attempt to pass the same course more than three times in total. Emory does not replace your earlier grade: every attempt at a repeated course, passed or not, counts in your GPA, and the original grade stays on your transcript alongside the new one. If you repeat a course you already passed, the new attempt's credit hours do not count again toward your degree, and you need your faculty advisor's and a dean's approval to retake it in the first place.

To stay in good academic standing at Emory College you need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00, and you also need a GPA of at least 2.00 in every individual term you're enrolled.

Falling short starts a defined sequence rather than immediate dismissal: a student who doesn't meet the standard first receives an Academic Warning, then can face Academic Suspension. A suspended student may appeal into the Academic Reengagement Program; a student readmitted on Academic Warning who still doesn't meet the GPA and degree-progression standards is dismissed from Emory. The dean also has discretion to dismiss a student who is consistently falling short, or for whom graduation has become mathematically impossible.

Graduating from Emory College requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 across all letter-graded work (students who matriculated before Fall 2020 need at least 1.9 instead), plus a minimum 2.0 average within your major's own course requirements.

You'll also need at least 126 credit hours in total (with only one credit of physical education countable, and caps on applied-music and dance credit), and residency in Emory College for the four semesters immediately before you graduate — the last 64 hours of coursework for most students, or at least 54 hours across three semesters for students continuing on from Oxford College.
