Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) GPA Calculator

Only the letter grades A, B, C, D, and F carry grade points and are counted in the grade-point average. Several other symbols appear on the record but are not counted in GPA: P (Pass) and NP (No Pass), RD (Report Delayed), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), MW (Military Withdrawal), and W (Withdrawal).

If a course is repeated after a substandard grade (D, F, NP, or NC), the highest grade earned is the one used in computing the cumulative GPA; the lower grade(s) from earlier attempts are excluded from the GPA calculation once the repetition is annotated on the record. Repetition to improve a substandard grade is limited to three attempts at a given course within the Los Angeles Community College District, with a petition required for a third repeat.

Academic probation is reached when a student has attempted at least 12 semester units and has a cumulative grade-point average below 2.0 (a "C"). Progress probation is reached when a student has enrolled in at least 12 semester units and the percentage of units recorded as W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), or NP (No Pass) reaches 50% or more.

A student on academic or progress probation for three consecutive semesters may be dismissed. Once dismissed, a student may not attend any LACCD college for one year and must petition for readmission at the end of that period; readmission may be granted, denied, or postponed based on the student's documented circumstances.

To earn an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree, a student must complete a minimum of 60 semester units with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 ("C") or better in all work attempted in the curriculum on which the degree is based.

Each fall and spring semester, the Dean's Honor List recognizes students who complete 12 or more units in the semester with a 3.5 GPA or better (or 6 to 11.5 units with a 3.5 GPA, having also completed a cumulative 12+ units at 3.5 or better).

At graduation, cumulative GPA in all college coursework attempted determines Latin honors: Summa Cum Laude (3.8-4.0), Magna Cum Laude (3.6-3.79), and Cum Laude (3.3-3.59). Certificate coursework does not count toward graduation-honors eligibility. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian are the graduating students with the highest and second-highest cumulative GPA, based on standing at the end of the fall semester.

Students transferring from non-accredited institutions may, after completing 30 units with a "C" or better GPA at Los Angeles Southwest College, petition to have previously completed non-accredited coursework evaluated for acceptance; only 15 units of such credit may be accepted. Course work taken outside the Los Angeles Community College District must be documented with an official transcript filed with the Office of Admissions and Records.
