Amrita uses a relative (curved) grading system for regular, on-campus B.Tech courses: a student's letter grade reflects how their class performed as a whole, not a fixed percentage cut-off, and grades are awarded by the Class Committee without student representatives present at the final meeting.

The scale runs across eight graded bands, from O (Outstanding) at the top down to F (Fail) at the bottom — no fixed, general marks-to-grade table is published for regular coursework. (A percentage table does exist, but it applies only to NPTEL/SWAYAM online courses taken in place of electives, and even there the mapped grade is bumped one full letter higher before it is awarded.)

Three further grades are administrative rather than performance-based: FA (Failed due to shortage of Attendance, awarded once attendance drops below 75%), I (Incomplete, used only for Lab courses, Projects, and Seminars pending a later assessment), and W (Withheld, which carries no grade point at all).

Amrita reports a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), both credit-hour weighted:

• SGPA = the sum, across a semester's registered courses, of (Course Credits × Grade Point earned), divided by the total credits registered that semester.
• CGPA = the same sum across every semester completed so far, divided by the total credits registered across all semesters.

Both figures are rounded to two decimal places, and both include every course a student has registered for — failed courses are counted in the average, not excluded, until the course is repeated and a new grade is earned.

A course only counts as completed (R.19) once a student has registered for it, kept at least 75% attendance, sat the end-semester exam, and earned a P grade or better — anything below P (F, FA, or I) does not clear the course.

Attendance shortfall. Falling below 75% attendance bars a student from the end-semester exam and results in an automatic FA grade, which stays on the record until the course is completed successfully through a remedial option.

Incomplete. An I grade (Lab/Project/Seminar courses only) converts to the earned grade once the work is finished the following semester — if it is not, it automatically becomes an F.

Repeating a course. Students can clear a dropped or failed course by re-registering when it is next offered in a regular semester, or through a 'run-time re-do': daily last-hour classes, dedicated Saturday sessions, or (from Semester V, capped at one course, for students with at most two current failures) a contact-only option requiring at least 15 hours with faculty. A 'second chance' exam, held about a month after results, is also open to 6th- and 8th-semester students with a single current-semester failure and no other outstanding backlog. Supplementary exams are capped at three extra attempts before a student must sit the course's full 100-mark exam, and are always graded against the most recently taught version of the course.

This document does not define a probation status or a CGPA-based dismissal threshold — a student's standing is managed entirely through these repeat/remedial routes and the maximum-duration ceiling on the whole programme.

To complete the B.Tech programme (R.24.1), a student must pass every core course, elective, and project requirement in the curriculum — a P grade or better in each, per R.19 — and earn the minimum credits the curriculum specifies, within the maximum allowed duration. R.24.1 does not add a separate, standalone minimum-CGPA figure on top of this: graduation is course-by-course passing plus credit completion, not a single CGPA gate (the CGPA-based classification bands determine your class of degree, not your eligibility to graduate).

Time limit. The programme is designed for 8 semesters. Students may take up to 12 semesters with the prior permission of their Faculty Advisor, Department Chairperson, and Dean/Principal (including any approved leave of absence). Beyond 12 semesters, an extension needs Vice-Chancellor approval, ratified by the Academic Council.

The degree itself is awarded once these requirements are met, provided there are no pending disciplinary proceedings or outstanding dues, on the recommendation of the Academic Council and approval of the Board of Management.

For students who finish within the standard 8 semesters, Amrita classifies the degree by CGPA (R.24.2):

*Distinction also requires at least one paper submitted to or published in a Scopus-indexed journal or conference (R.14.1-R.14.3). Students already at CGPA 8.00+ use their first paper toward distinction eligibility directly; students below 8.00 apply bonus marks from a first paper toward reaching 8.00, then need a second paper for distinction itself. If bonus marks still do not bring CGPA to 8.00, the publication only improves the grade it was submitted against — it does not unlock distinction.

Separately, bonus marks of 5–10 are available for representing the university in technical events, sports, cultural activities, or Seva/community service (R.14.4).

Ranking (R.22) is based purely on CGPA, limited to students who passed every subject on their first attempt, and final ranking is only awarded to students who complete the programme within the stipulated 8 semesters.
