Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) GPA Calculator

VIT grades every course on a letter scale from S down to F, each letter carrying a fixed grade point (S = 10 down to E = 5, F = 0) that never changes regardless of how the letter itself was earned.

What varies is how marks turn into that letter — VIT runs two methods side by side under the same current regulations, chosen by course type and class size, not by student choice:

• Relative (curved) grading is the default for theory courses with class strength above 10: your letter depends on how your marks compare to that class's own mean and standard deviation (σ), so the cut-offs move from one course offering to the next.
• Absolute grading, with fixed marks bands, applies to laboratory, soft-skill, extracurricular, and project courses regardless of size, and to any theory class of 10 students or fewer.

"A combination of absolute and relative grading systems is adopted in converting marks to grades" — both are simultaneously in force, not a choice VIT makes once for the whole university.

VIT reports a semester GPA and a cumulative CGPA, both credit-hour weighted on VIT's 0–10 grade-point scale:

• GPA = the sum, across a semester's registered courses, of (Course Credits × Grade Point), divided by the total credits registered that semester.
• CGPA = the same sum across every semester since joining the University, divided by total credits registered across all semesters — including semesters with an F grade.

If a student fails a course more than once, or substitutes it, the course's credits are counted only once in both the numerator and denominator, not once per attempt. Pass-Fail (P) courses, audited courses, and Minor/Honours courses are excluded entirely from the GPA/CGPA calculation. Both figures are rounded to two decimal places.

VIT also states its own fixed rule for converting CGPA to a percentage — not a national or UGC formula, specific to VIT: % equivalent of CGPA = CGPA × 10 (a CGPA of 8.75 equals 87.5%). The Controller of Examinations issues certificates confirming this conversion on request.

Falling below CGPA 4.00. All students are promoted automatically every semester regardless of academic performance — VIT has no semester-by-semester probation gate. But if a student's CGPA drops below 4.00 (out of 10) at any point, they are capped at registering a maximum of 16 credits per semester (versus the normal 23–27) until their CGPA crosses 4.00 again. If performance doesn't improve in subsequent semesters, a Committee under the Dean of Academics reviews the case and recommends action to the Vice-Chancellor, up to cancellation of studentship.

Backlogs (F/N grades). An F grade (failed the course overall) or an N grade (didn't clear one or more components, or was debarred/absent from the final exam) counts as a backlog and must be cleared by re-registering the course in a later regular, summer, or weekend semester. If the failure was whole-course (F), the entire course must be re-registered; if only a component was missed (N) while other components were cleared, only that component needs re-registration.

Course withdrawal. Students can withdraw from a course within the first three instructional days after CAT-I marks are finalized. A withdrawn course is recorded as W and does not count toward the grade point calculation at all — it isn't listed on the semester or consolidated Grade Sheet. Backlog (re-registered) courses cannot be withdrawn.

Academic malpractice. Malpractice in continuous assessment zeroes that component; malpractice in the Final Assessment Test (FAT) results in an N grade for every course the student was eligible to write that semester, clearable only by re-registration in a later semester.

VIT's regulations do not print a fixed minimum CGPA to graduate. Instead, the degree requirement is credit- and curriculum-based: a student becomes eligible for the degree by completing all mandatory Discipline Core (DC) courses and meeting the minimum credit requirement and course/credit distribution laid out in their own programme curriculum. On meeting these, a Provisional Certificate is issued and the degree conferred at the next Convocation.

This is separate from the CGPA 4.00 threshold described above, which caps how many credits a student may register per semester and can trigger a studentship review — it is an academic-standing floor, not a graduation floor. A student who clears every required course and credit but whose final CGPA happens to sit above 4.00 has met VIT's stated graduation bar; VIT's document simply doesn't define graduation eligibility in CGPA terms at all.

'Honours' credential. Earned by registering additional credits (minimum 18) in a student's own major discipline, on top of their regular programme, within the programme's normal minimum duration. Eligibility requires a minimum average CGPA of 7.50 in the Honours courses themselves. The award appears on the degree certificate as "Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in …" Grades earned in Honours courses do not count toward the student's regular programme GPA/CGPA.

'Minor' credential. The same structure applies to a Minor in a different discipline: minimum 18 additional credits, minimum average CGPA of 7.50 in the Minor courses, and those grades are likewise excluded from the main programme's GPA/CGPA.

Honours Club. A separate recognition (not a credential) for students who maintain a CGPA of 9.25 or above, have no F grade on record, and have never been debarred for attendance or indiscipline. Membership is withdrawn if any of these conditions stop being met.

Programme rank list. Prepared on CGPA alone. Students tied at the same CGPA share the same rank, and the next distinct rank skips the number of students in the tie (e.g. two students tied for 5th both get 5th, and the next rank awarded is 7th).

Treatment differs by where the credits come from:

• Within VIT (programme migration between VIT programmes at the end of first year): if the completed courses match the syllabus and credits of the new programme's curriculum, the credits and their performance grades transfer and count toward GPA/CGPA in the new curriculum.
• From another university (on admission/transfer into VIT, subject to that university being recognized and approved for credit transfer by VIT): only completed courses with awarded grades are mapped and transferred. These transferred credits count toward the minimum credit requirement for the degree but are explicitly not counted toward GPA/CGPA.
• Semester Abroad Program (SAP): credits and grades earned at a VIT partner university, or a QS/THE/Shanghai top-500 ranked university, during an approved study-abroad semester are counted toward CGPA. Eligibility requires a CGPA of at least 7.00 with no current backlog (F/N grade), and a maximum of 21 transferable credits (excluding project work).
