Symbiosis International University (SIU) GPA Calculator

SIU grades courses one of two ways. Most regular courses use relative grading: grades are assigned by where a student ranks against their own class (a fixed top-to-bottom proportion), not by a marks cut-off. Absolute grading — fixed percentage cut-offs applied to a student's own marks, with no class curve — is used instead for Project, Dissertation, Thesis, and Internship courses under every Faculty, and is mandatory for any course with 15 or fewer students. Absolute-graded courses are flagged with a “~” symbol on the grade sheet, and each semester's list of absolute-grading courses is reported to the Controller of Examinations.

Both methods share the same letter grades and point values, running from O (Outstanding) at the top down to F (Fail) at 0 points. To pass a course, a student must separately clear Continuous Assessment, the Term End Examination, and Practicals (where applicable) — each requires a minimum grade point of 4.00, and any component scoring below that is recorded as F regardless of the other components.

SIU's semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of a student's course grade points that semester. CGPA extends the same weighting across every semester completed so far: the sum of each semester's GPA multiplied by that semester's credit points, divided by total credit points earned to date. CGPA is calculated and reported to two decimal places.

For transcript purposes, SIU also publishes a fixed CGPA-to-percentage formula: Percentage = CGPA ÷ 10 × 100.

Audit courses (additional, optional courses beyond a programme's normal requirements) are excluded from GPA/CGPA computation entirely — they are recorded only as a Pass grade if cleared, evaluated fully on continuous assessment.

SIU has no provision to re-sit an exam solely to improve a marks or grade already earned — a student can only reappear in a course after failing it (as a backlog examination), not to raise a passing grade.

Term Not Granted / Course Not Granted (TNG/CNG). A student who doesn't meet the minimum attendance requirement for a course is marked TNG/CNG for it and must clear that course in a later season as a backlog examination, paying a separate backlog fee for each attempt.

Allowed To Keep Terms (ATKT). Progression to a later semester is gated on CGPA at an earlier checkpoint: for example, in a 3–5 year programme a student cannot sit the Semester-5 Term End Examination unless their CGPA through Semester-2 is at least 4.00 (the same two-semesters-back pattern repeats through Semester-10); in a 2-year programme, Semester-3 and Semester-4 are gated on Semester-1 and Semester-2 CGPA respectively. A student who clears the CGPA bar for a later checkpoint may still sit all earlier semesters even if they missed an intermediate one. Once a programme's minimum duration has elapsed, the ATKT gate no longer applies and any remaining semester backlogs can be cleared during the programme's extended validity period.

Maximum programme duration. Postgraduate students may keep terms for up to one year beyond the programme's normal length; undergraduates, up to two years beyond; Diploma, PG Diploma, and PG Executive programmes, two years beyond. Four-Year UG Programmes (FYUGP) under NEP 2020 carry a seven-year total validity, with re-entry after an exit permitted within three years. A student who doesn't finish within the stipulated period must take fresh admission, and prior examination performance and terms kept are voided.

SIU awards a degree (UG or PG) only to students with a CGPA of at least 4.00 on completion of the programme, alongside clearing the university's mandatory non-credit value-added courses. From Academic Year 2024-25, all full-time UG and PG students must complete Health and Wellness Modules I and II (pass/fail, non-credit) once during their academic life — these replace the earlier Fitness for Life, Integrated Disaster Management, and Emotional Well-Being requirements. Fitness for Life remains separately mandatory for undergraduate students' degree award.

Under the Four-Year UG Programme (NEP 2020), a student who chooses to exit after Semester II or Semester IV — with no backlog and otherwise eligible — is awarded a Certificate or Diploma after completing a 4-credit Vocational Course in the summer term.

SIU presents four Chancellor's Gold Medals every year at Convocation: Best Outgoing Student (Postgraduate), Best Outgoing Student (Undergraduate), Best Outgoing International Student (Postgraduate), and Best Outgoing International Student (Undergraduate) — alongside several named, donor-sponsored medals tied to specific programmes, and a Certificate of Merit for the best academic performance in each UG and PG programme.

To be eligible, a student must be enrolled full-time, must have passed every Term End, Continuous Assessment, and Practical examination on the first attempt, without the benefit of grace marks, within the programme's prescribed duration, and must have no record of a code-of-conduct breach. Domestic students additionally need a minimum CGPA of 7.00 out of 10 (this CGPA floor does not apply to the International Student categories).
