Anna University GPA Calculator

Anna University's Affiliated-Institutions Regulations 2025 use an absolute grading system: "Absolute grading system shall be followed for all category of courses." Your letter grade is set by fixed marks cut-offs, not by how your class performs — there is no curve.

Grades run from S (the top grade) down to U ("Re-appearance", the bottom grade) across eight bands on a 0–10 scale — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact marks cut-offs and grade points.

To pass a Theory, Laboratory-Integrated Theory, or Laboratory course you need at least 45% in the end-semester exam and at least 50% overall combining continuous assessment and the end-semester exam. Falling short of either earns a U.

Anna University reports a semester GPA and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA), both credit-weighted:

• GPA is the weighted average of the grade points earned in every course registered that semester, weighted by each course's credits.
• CGPA is computed the same way but across all courses registered up to and including the latest completed semester, to two decimal places. Grades from optional additional courses that aren't mandatory for the degree are excluded from the CGPA.

For the consolidated grade sheet, Anna University also publishes its own CGPA-to-percentage formula: % of Marks = CGPA × 10.

Attendance. You need at least 80% overall attendance to sit the end-semester exams. With an accepted medical certificate the floor relaxes to 75% per registered course. Fall below the 80% overall floor and you're prevented from appearing in every end-semester exam that semester, can't move on to the next semester, and may only rejoin in the same semester the following academic year.

Repeating a failed course. If you don't clear the passing criteria in a Theory, Laboratory-Integrated Theory, or Laboratory course, you reappear in the end-semester exam in a later semester — your continuous assessment marks from the first attempt are retained and count toward every later attempt. From your third attempt onward, you're declared to have passed if you secure at least 50% in the end-semester exam alone, even without meeting the usual combined-marks rule.

Anna University's Regulations 2025 don't set a standalone minimum-CGPA floor for the base degree. Instead, you graduate once you've passed every course in your curriculum (repeat attempts are allowed under the reappearance rules) and met your programme's other credit requirements, with no pending disciplinary action.

Your CGPA instead decides your degree classification:

• First Class with Distinction (Honours) — all curriculum courses, plus any Honours-vertical courses, passed in the first appearance within the prescribed duration; CGPA of at least 8.50; never prevented from an end-semester exam.
• First Class with Distinction (non-Honours route, including Minor-degree cases) — CGPA of at least 8.50, first-appearance pass, never prevented from an exam.
• First Class — CGPA of at least 6.50, all courses passed in the first appearance within the prescribed duration.
• Second Class — a CGPA below 6.50 with all courses passed in the first appearance within the prescribed duration, or completion within an extended duration regardless of CGPA.

Students may opt into an Honours Degree by completing 18 additional credits — either a Capstone Design Project or Six Elective Courses — taken from the fifth semester onward, on top of the normal curriculum.

To opt in: a minimum combined CGPA of 7.0 across your third and fourth semesters, with no history of arrears (backlogs).

To have Honours conferred: complete the additional coursework in the first appearance and finish with a final CGPA of at least 8.50, with no history of arrears. Fall short of 8.50 and the additional coursework still appears on your grade sheet with a "Certificate of Appreciation" — but the Honours degree itself is not conferred.
