How grading works at Notre Dame Australia

The University of Notre Dame Australia grades higher education courses on a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) scale, with five academic grades: HD (High Distinction, 80–100%, 4 points), D (Distinction, 70–79%, 3 points), C (Credit, 60–69%, 2 points), P (Pass, 50–59%, 1 point) and F (Fail, 0–49%, 0 points).

Assessment is criterion-referenced and standards-based, so there is no requirement for grades to reflect a fixed distribution — a class of students can, in principle, all receive a High Distinction if the work merits it.

Notre Dame Australia also uses a small number of administrative result codes alongside these five grades — for example a conceded pass for students who narrowly fail, or a fail recorded for non-completion of required work — but these apply the same underlying grade points rather than adding new ones to the scale.

How Notre Dame Australia calculates your GPA

Each course grade is assigned a grade point value — HD = 4, D = 3, C = 2, P = 1, and F (along with a conceded pass, a fail for non-completion, or a withdrawal with fail) = 0. Each course's grade point value is multiplied by its units of credit; these products are summed and divided by the total units of credit, producing a GPA rounded to two decimal places.

A GPA is not calculated for students in a program with a volume of learning of 100 units of credit or less, or (other than in the Doctor of Medicine program) for students who have received academic grades in fewer than six courses. Courses graded on an undifferentiated pass/fail basis, the research component of a bachelor honours program, and most credit granted for prior learning do not contribute to the GPA calculation.

Academic standing at Notre Dame Australia

Notre Dame Australia reviews every student's academic standing at the end of each teaching period. A student keeps Good Standing provided they achieve a pass grade or better in at least 50% of their courses (by units of credit) in each half of the calendar year.

A student who passes fewer than 50% of their attempted courses is placed on Conditional standing. They can still re-enrol, though their School may set conditions on that re-enrolment, and they must return to satisfactory progress in the following half-year to avoid meeting the criteria for university suspension.

GPA requirements for graduating with Distinction

An undergraduate degree at Notre Dame Australia can be awarded with Distinction or High Distinction where a student's performance is of an excellent standard, based on their GPA: High Distinction requires a GPA of 3.5 or greater, and Distinction requires a GPA of 3.25 or more but less than 3.5. Eligibility also requires the program to be at least three years in duration, with a minimum of two years of graded study, at least two of which were completed at Notre Dame Australia.

Honours classifications at Notre Dame Australia

For bachelor (honours) programs, a board of examiners decides the class of honours from a student's average final mark in the courses used to calculate it: First Class Honours (H1) for 80–100%, Honours Division IIA (H2A) for 70–79%, and Honours Division IIB (H2B) for 60–69%. These honours classes are separate from — and use different mark ranges than — a student's course-by-course academic grades and overall GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at University of Notre Dame Australia?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at University of Notre Dame Australia?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this University of Notre Dame Australia GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.

Does Notre Dame Australia use WAM or GPA?

Both exist, but they serve different purposes. Your GPA (0.0-4.0, based on grade points) is the figure used on your formal transcript of results and to decide Distinction/High Distinction conferral. A separate Weighted Average Mark (WAM) (0-100, based on your actual percentage marks) may also be used to decide prizes and awards. No Notre Dame Australia document states that WAM replaces GPA as your official course-level grade.
