How grading works at RMIT University
RMIT grades Higher Education and Associate Degree courses on a 5-grade, 4-point scale: High Distinction (HD), Distinction (DI), Credit (CR), Pass (PA) and Fail (NN), each tied to a mark range.

RMIT also publishes several administrative result codes — Pass Only (PX), Supplementary Pass (SP), Failed mandatory hurdle (NH) and others — that carry no published mark range and, in PX's case, are explicitly excluded from the GPA calculation.

How RMIT calculates your GPA
To calculate your GPA for a course, RMIT multiplies the course's credit points (or student contact hours for vocational education) by the grade point value of the grade received, then divides the total grade points by the total credit points or contact hours.
Your GPA is rounded to one decimal point.
RMIT also publishes a separate Weighted Average Mark (WAM) — an average of your actual course marks (not grade points), weighted by credit points. Both figures appear on your record: your whole-program GPA continues to appear on your transcript, while WAM is used instead of GPA specifically to determine honours classification for bachelor honours students who commenced on or after 1 January 2016.

GPA, WAM and RMIT's award classifications
For bachelor degrees of three years' normal duration, a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above earns the award Pass with Distinction; below 3.00 is awarded as a Pass.
For bachelor honours degrees commenced on or after 1 January 2016, RMIT uses WAM instead of GPA to set the honours level: 80+ is Honours First Class (H1), 70–79 is Honours Class 2A (H2A), and 60–69 is Honours Class 2B (H2B). Honours students who commenced before 1 January 2016 have their honours level based on their whole-program GPA instead.
Your GPA may also be used to select students for prizes and scholarships, and as an eligibility criterion for research-program or further study selection.

Credit transfer and your RMIT GPA
RMIT records credit transferred into your program under separate administrative codes — Exemption (EX), Block exemption (BX), Masters Exemption (MX), External Pass Grade (EPG), External Fail Grade (EFG) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RLG) — for students receiving exemptions, block credit, or grades from exchange/study-abroad courses. None of these codes carries a published grade point value, so they sit outside the grade-point table RMIT uses to calculate your GPA.

What's the difference between GPA and WAM at RMIT?
GPA weights each course's grade-point value (0–4) by its credit points. WAM instead weights your actual percentage marks by credit points, on a 0–100 scale. Both appear on your record, but WAM is used instead of GPA specifically to set honours classification for bachelor honours students who commenced on or after 1 January 2016 — your whole-program GPA otherwise continues to appear on your transcript.

Does a Supplementary Pass (SP) count toward your RMIT GPA?
