Deakin University GPA Calculator

Deakin grades every Higher Education unit on a fixed, university-wide percentage-to-grade table — every course is graded the same way. Marks run from 0 to 100 and map onto five results: High Distinction (HD, 80% and over), Distinction (D, 70-79%), Credit (C, 60-69%), Pass (P, 50-59%), and Fail (N, below 50%).

Deakin does not use a grade-point value for any of these results — there is no A+/A/B-style points column anywhere in its grading policy. Final results are also always whole numbers with no decimal places.

Beyond the five graded results, Deakin uses a range of administrative status codes on results: UP/UN (ungraded pass/fail, where a unit only has pass/fail outcomes), PC (pass conceded), EP/EN (a pass or fail earned at another institution under a cross-institutional arrangement), and XN/WN (fail variants for non-submission or late withdrawal), among others for pending or withheld results.

Deakin does not calculate a GPA. Instead it uses a Weighted Average Mark (WAM), on the same 0-100 scale as an individual unit mark:

WAM = the sum of (credit points for a unit × the mark for that unit), divided by the total credit points.

Only units studied at Deakin itself count — units completed at another institution under a cross-institutional arrangement, or for which credit has already been granted, are excluded. A unit is included in the WAM where it was awarded HD, D, C, P, N, PC, XN or WN; the mark used for the calculation is the assigned mark for HD/D/C/P/N, a fixed 50 for PC (pass conceded), and a fixed 0 for XN and WN. For students in a combined or dual course, each component course's WAM is calculated only from the units undertaken as part of that component.

In Deakin's own words: "While some institutions use a Grade Point Average (GPA) Deakin uses a Weighted Average Mark (WAM)... The WAM is an internal (Deakin-only) calculation used to ensure that a student remains in good academic standing while they are studying. It may also be used for other purposes, such as the awarding of University Awards and Prizes or identification of Distinction or Honours achievement levels in some courses." Deakin does not publish WAMs on academic transcripts or the Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) — it is an internal figure only.

Deakin's WAM is used, among other things, to help monitor whether a student remains in good academic standing. Deakin's assessment policy does not publish a single university-wide minimum WAM threshold for standing — that sits with each course's own progress rules — but it does publish two specific relief mechanisms for a student who is one credit point short of completing their course because of a single failed unit:

• Pass Conceded (PC) may be awarded where the student scored between 45% and 49% (inclusive) in that unit, has not failed any hurdle requirement, has not failed due to an academic-integrity breach, and has not already received a PC in any other unit of the same degree.
• Supplementary Assessment may instead be offered where PC conditions are met but can't be awarded due to professional accreditation requirements, or where the student scored 40-49% (inclusive) on their most recent attempt within the last 12 months but doesn't otherwise qualify for PC. Where granted, the resulting mark is capped at 50%.

Both are applied for through the "Final Unit to Complete" process within 5 University working days of results release.

For Honours units and courses specifically (Deakin's Honours-year/embedded-Honours programmes), results are classified rather than graded on the standard HD/D/C/P/N scale:

• H1 — First Class Honours (80% and over)
• H2A — Second Class Honours, Division A (70-79%)
• H2B — Second Class Honours, Division B (60-69%)
• H3 — Third Class Honours (50-59%)

These use the same percentage cut points as the general HD/D/C/P bands but are a separate classification scale that applies to Honours-specific units and courses, not to Deakin's general Bachelor's-degree grading.

A student who completes a unit at another institution under an approved cross-institutional enrolment must provide Deakin with an official academic transcript for that unit within two weeks of the result being released by the other institution. The outcome is recorded on the Deakin transcript as EP (External Institution pass — a pass or higher grade was earned) or EN (External Institution fail).

Units completed under a cross-institutional arrangement, or units for which credit towards a Deakin course has already been granted, are excluded from Deakin's own WAM calculation entirely — only units actually studied at Deakin count toward the WAM.
