Brock University GPA Calculator

Brock University grades undergraduate courses on a straight percentage scale — the Registrar’s Transcript Legend prints no grade-point or GPA column anywhere. Your course grade is the percentage itself; the letter is a descriptive band over it.

For grades awarded as of May 28, 2025 (undergraduate):

• A+ — 90 to 100
• A — 80 to 89
• B — 70 to 79
• C — 60 to 69
• D — 50 to 59
• F — 49 or lower (failing grade)

The Legend is cohort-gated, so an older transcript reads differently: for grades awarded as of May 2010, A+ is listed as N/A and A spans 80 to 100. If an older transcript and a current one disagree on what an A means, that difference is Brock’s own, not an error.

Brock’s graduate and Faculty of Education scales differ again — graduate has no D and fails below 60, and Education uses P1/P2/P3. This calculator uses the undergraduate scale.

Your Brock average is computed by dividing the sum of (credit weight x grade) across all your courses by the total number of credits attempted. Only courses taken at Brock count - courses taken elsewhere on a Letter of Permission are marked Pass/Fail and excluded entirely from your average.

One quirk in the formula: for the purpose of calculating your average only, any "F" grade of 45 or lower is treated as if it were exactly 45, while an F between 46 and 49 counts at its actual numeric value. This floor only affects the average calculation - your transcript still shows your actual grade in the course, not the floored value.

If you repeat a course you already passed (up to 3 credits total, and no course more than once), the repeat's grade replaces the original in your average - whether it's higher or lower - though both attempts stay on your transcript. If you repeat a course you failed, the same rule applies: the second grade is the one used in your average.

Brock sets a single, consistent bar for continued registration: a minimum 60 percent overall average. First-year students must reach it once they've received grades in at least two credits; continuing students must maintain it every session.

Falling short triggers a ladder of increasingly serious standings:

• Academic Probation - triggered by an overall average below 60 percent. Noted on your Statement of Standing (not your transcript). Re-evaluated once you've attempted 3 or more credits while on probation; you must bring your average on those courses back to 60 percent to continue.
• Academic Suspension - if you don't meet the 60 percent bar on courses taken while on probation, you're suspended for one full calendar year. This one does appear on your transcript. An alternative to suspension exists in some cases: staying on probation, taking a mandatory non-credit support course, and capping your course load at 3 credits.
• Academic Debarment - failing a second Academic Probation (after readmission from suspension) leads to debarment for a minimum of two years.
• Permanent Debarment - failing a final Academic Probation after debarment.

Courses taken elsewhere while on Suspension or Debarment are not eligible for transfer credit upon readmission.

Brock's baseline degree floor is a 60 percent overall average, and 60 percent in your designated major credits, for a Pass (15-credit), Non-Honours (20-credit), or With Major (20-credit) degree. (The BA Humanities and BA Social Sciences 15-credit degrees need only the 60 percent overall figure, with no separate major-average requirement.)

Brock recognizes several levels of graduating standing, all measured in percent:

• First-Class Honours (20-credit Honours program) - minimum 80 percent average in your major credits, 70 percent in the rest. Transfer students additionally need a minimum 75 percent overall average and 80 percent major average, based on Brock courses only.
• Second-Class Honours (20-credit Honours program) - minimum 70 percent in major credits, 60 percent in the rest. Transfer students need a minimum 65 percent overall and 70 percent major average (Brock courses only).
• Degree with Distinction (15-credit Pass or 20-credit non-Honours) - minimum 80 percent overall average. Transfer students need a minimum 80 percent cumulative Brock average and 80 percent overall average.

Separately, during your studies, you're placed on the Dean's Honours List once you've completed 5 undergraduate credits with an 80 percent average on those credits - re-assessed again at the 10, 15, and 20-credit milestones (all credits within the milestone must be Brock credits).

If you're transferring from another university, you can earn a Brock 20-credit or 15-credit degree as a first degree with a minimum of five Brock credits (a BEd Program II degree needs a minimum of four Brock credits). Whatever your transfer history, only courses taken at Brock are used in determining your average - transfer-credited courses from elsewhere don't factor in at all.

Going the other direction - taking a course elsewhere for transfer back to Brock via a Letter of Permission - requires good standing first (a minimum of five completed credits with a minimum 60 percent overall average). Letter-of-Permission courses are recorded as Pass/Fail on your transcript and, like other transferred courses, are excluded from your Brock average entirely.
