James Cook University (JCU) GPA Calculator

James Cook University (JCU) grades each subject with a result code and, for scored subjects, an attached Grade Point Average Score on a 7-point scale.

• HD (Pass with High Distinction) — 85%-100% — 7
• D (Pass with Distinction) — 75%-84% — 6
• C (Pass with Credit) — 65%-74% — 5
• P (Pass) — 50%-64% — 4
• F (Fail — did not meet the passing requirements, marks below 50%) — 1.5

JCU distinguishes two different fail outcomes: an F (did not meet the passing requirements in a graded subject) carries a Grade Point Average Score of 1.5, while an X (did not complete any assessment, i.e. did not make a reasonable attempt) carries a Grade Point Average Score of 0. A subject you withdraw from after the census date is recorded as FW (also 1.5). Ungraded subjects use S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory), which do not contribute to your GPA.

Some disciplines may use additional methods for determining grade ranges that differ from the ranges above, as approved by the College Dean and stipulated in the Subject Outline.

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a calculation of your average grade or result: each result is assigned a number known as the grade point, and the higher the result, the higher the corresponding grade point.

JCU's own GPA calculator uses this formula:

GPA = (HD subjects × 7 + D subjects × 6 + C subjects × 5 + P subjects × 4 + F subjects × 1.5) ÷ total subjects counted

An X grade (did not complete any assessment) contributes a value of 0 to your GPA. Ungraded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) results and administrative withdrawals (WD) do not contribute to your GPA at all.

To achieve satisfactory academic performance, you must: pass all core subjects; maintain a course Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00 or above; and pass more than 50% of your completed credit points.

• Satisfactory Academic Status: you are meeting all of the above.
• Academic Caution Status: you may have failed the first attempt of a core subject or have a low GPA; you are advised to improve in future teaching periods.
• Conditional Status: you failed subjects and have not maintained satisfactory academic performance; specific conditions are placed on your enrolment (for example, passing a set percentage of credit points each teaching period, or passing specified subjects on your next attempt) that must be met to avoid exclusion.
• Excluded Status: you are not permitted to continue in your course (though you may apply to transfer to a different discipline) after failing to meet previously placed conditions or maintaining a persistently low GPA.

A graduand who has met all of the course requirements for the course to which they are admitted (or through a related exit award) will have their award conferred, either by the University Council or by the Chancellor outside of Council meetings.

Upon conferral, you will receive a Testamur and an Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS), which details your subjects and results. A digitised copy is made available, with the original Testamur mailed after conferral.

Honours classifications map onto the same 85/75/65/50 percentage bands as the ordinary grade scale:

• Class I Honours — 85-100 — equivalent to High Distinction
• Class IIA Honours — 75-84 — equivalent to Distinction
• Class IIB Honours — 65-74 — equivalent to Credit
• Class III Honours — 50-64 — equivalent to Pass

Graduation-level academic excellence awards include:

• University Medal: requires a minimum GPA of 6.50 for JCU subjects (excluding thesis subjects), Honours Class I rank of IA/IB/IC, and College Dean endorsement.
• With Distinction: awarded for a minimum GPA of 6.00 across your JCU coursework studies.

Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve your award and may be granted via Credit Transfer, articulation, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), or advanced standing. You may be eligible for credit if you have completed or partially completed study at a university or other recognised post-secondary provider and your learning outcomes are assessed as equivalent. RPL can also recognise skills and knowledge gained from paid work, professional training or community roles, if they match a subject's learning outcomes.
