Flinders University GPA Calculator

Flinders uses a six-symbol grade scale on a 0–7 point range: High Distinction (HD, 7), Distinction (DN, 6), Credit (CR, 5), Pass (P, 4), Fail (F, 1.5) and Withdraw, Fail (WF, 1.5). Note Flinders spells its second-highest grade DN, not the bare “D” some other institutions use.

Topic grades are nominally tied to an aggregate mark — HD 85–100, DN 75–84, CR 65–74, P 50–64 — but the grade is not a pure function of the mark: a student can still be failed “irrespective of the aggregate mark achieved” if they haven't satisfactorily completed a hurdle requirement (for example, a safe-practice or professional-registration requirement). Percentages are recorded internally on topic assessment sheets but do not appear on the academic transcript — only the final grade symbol does.

Some topics are assessed only as a pass or fail, with no distinction between satisfactory and outstanding performance — these are graded Non-Graded Pass (NGP). No mark is assigned for an NGP topic, and it isn't counted in your Grade Point Average.

Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade values: multiply each topic's grade value by that topic's unit value, add the results across all topics undertaken, then divide by your total units undertaken. GPA is calculated to two decimal places.

Two symbols are excluded from the calculation entirely: Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Withdraw, Not Fail (WN). A late withdrawal after the withdraw-not-fail date, recorded as Withdraw, Fail (WF), is not excluded — it carries the same grade value as an ordinary Fail (1.5) and is counted in your GPA.

If you completed study before 1993, or at another institution, Flinders converts it into this scale using the conversion table the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) publishes annually — a separate, external table this page doesn't reproduce.

Honours courses (not ordinary topics) are classified separately from the general grade scale, and only apply to students enrolled in an Honours course: Honours First Class (H1), nominally 85–100; Honours Second Class Division A (H2A), nominally 75–84; Honours Second Class Division B (H2B), nominally 65–74; Honours Third Class (H3), nominally 50–64; and Fail, below 50.

These classifications don't carry a Grade Point Average value of their own — they're an award classification for the Honours course as a whole, judged against criteria such as originality, independent research ability and critical awareness of scholarship in the discipline, not a topic-by-topic GPA input.

Flinders identifies a student as not meeting academic requirements if they fail the same topic more than once, or fail 50% or more of the total units they've attempted in their course. When this happens, the University first offers support and resources rather than an immediate penalty.

If a student continues not to meet academic requirements — across two or more semesters, or by breaching the conditions of a restricted study plan — their College's Progress Committee conducts a formal review. Outcomes range from approval to continue on the current study plan, through a restricted study plan or a deferred re-enrolment of up to 12 months, to preclusion from the course (and related courses in the same College preclusion group) for up to five years, or termination of enrolment.
