Grading Policies

Grades are reported at midterm (S, D, or F, plus Z and W where applicable); midterm grades are advisory only and are not part of the permanent record.

Pass/Fail (P/F) grading is available to undergraduates in good standing for eligible courses; a passing grade (equivalent to C- or higher) does not affect GPA, and an F counts as 0 toward GPA. Undergraduates may elect at most 12 units of P/F coursework.

An Incomplete (I) grade gives extra time to finish coursework; if not resolved by the stated deadline (37 days after the Fall term, 30 days after the January or Spring term), it converts to an F.

A course may be repeated at Saint Mary's or elsewhere; only the most recently earned grade counts toward GPA, and only the most recent units count toward graduation.

GPA Requirements for Enrollment Privileges

Course auditing (recorded with the mark "Z") requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and does not earn credit.

Overload registration (up to 36 units per academic year) requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher plus advisor approval.

January Term independent study (JAN 297/497) requires a 2.5 or better overall GPA for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Study abroad programs generally require a 2.8 minimum GPA (major and cumulative), though some programs set a higher threshold.

Academic Standing

Undergraduates maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 are considered to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress.

A student who ends a fall or spring semester below a 2.00 cumulative GPA enters Recovery Status, and must return to satisfactory progress by the end of the following semester or become subject to academic disqualification.

A student not already in Recovery Status may also be subject to disqualification if cumulative GPA falls below 1.55 at the end of a Fall or Spring semester.

The Academic Recovery Review Board may grant Special Academic Recovery for extenuating circumstances in place of disqualification.

Baccalaureate Degree Requirements

The bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 124 units, including at least 50 upper-division (300/400-level) units, of which at least 31 must be completed at Saint Mary's College.

At least 31 upper-division units must be completed in residence at Saint Mary's, including at least 50% (and no fewer than 6 units) of the upper-division units required by each major, minor, or certificate.

The Saint Mary's Honors Program requires a cumulative GPA of 3.50 to complete and receive recognition.

Latin honors at graduation: Summa Cum Laude requires a 3.85 cumulative GPA, Magna Cum Laude requires 3.70, and Cum Laude requires 3.50 (transfer students must also complete at least 30 units at Saint Mary's).

Commencement awards (e.g. Valedictorian, De La Salle Award) require a cumulative and/or major GPA of 3.70 as of March 1 of the graduating year.

Transfer Credit

Transfer coursework must carry at least .77 semester credit value and a minimum final grade of C- to be eligible for transfer.

Undergraduates may transfer up to 74 lower-division units (including up to 32 AP/IB or other non-course equivalency units) and up to 19 upper-division units.

All accepted transfer credit is recorded on the Saint Mary's transcript and computed into the student's cumulative GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SMC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SMC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Saint Mary's College of California (SMC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
