GPA Calculation, Repeats, and Forgiveness

Cumulative GPA is computed by dividing total quality points earned in courses graded A, B, C, D, or F by total credit hours attempted in those same courses; only National Louis University coursework is included. Grades of P, N, I, IE, X, W, and WW carry no quality points and are excluded from the calculation.

Course Repeats: Students may repeat a course (except where a program prohibits it) to improve a grade. Both attempts remain on the transcript and count toward attempted hours, but only the highest grade is used for cumulative GPA and credit-earned purposes.

Grade Forgiveness: Students may apply to exclude from cumulative GPA a grade earned in a course no longer offered (and therefore not repeatable). Undergraduates with a D or F may apply with a 2.0 GPA over their most recent 15 quarter hours attempted (no more than one "W"), for up to 25 quarter hours of forgiven credit. Graduate students with a C, D, or F may apply with a 3.0 GPA over their most recent 6 semester hours (master's/500-level EdS) or 9 semester hours (doctoral/600-level EdS), for up to that same number of forgiven hours.

Academic Amnesty: Students who change programs may apply to exclude from cumulative GPA a D or F (C or below for graduate programs) earned in coursework from a prior program that no longer applies to the new one, subject to minimum-GPA and credit-hour requirements in the new program and a forgiven-credit cap that varies by program level. Each student is eligible for only one amnesty appeal at the university.

Incomplete ("I") Grades: An instructor may assign an "I" grade if a student has completed at least 75% of coursework but cannot finish by term's end. The instructor sets a provisional grade when the "I" is granted; if the coursework is not completed within 90 days, the "I" lapses to that provisional grade, or to F (undergraduate) / N (graduate) if no provisional grade was set.

Grade Requirements for Degree Completion

For graduate students, grades of "D" are not accepted toward completion of degree requirements even though they are counted in the cumulative GPA. The pass/no-credit ("P") grading option is available only in designated courses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at NLU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at NLU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this National Louis University (NLU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
