Government College University (GCU) GPA Calculator

Government College University, Lahore uses a relative grading system: the final letter grade in each theory and practical course is awarded from the marks obtained and the student's relative position in the class, keeping in view the class size, rather than from fixed percentage cut-offs. Grades are then translated into grade points on a 0.00–4.00 scale.

Only Project, Dissertation and Internship Reports are graded on an absolute scale. Because course grading is relative, there is no university-wide percentage-to-letter table — the letter grades and their grade points are shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. To pass a course you must score at least 50% separately in the semester work and in the final examination; no grace marks are awarded.

Each course's Grade Point (GP) is its grade's numeric value multiplied by the course credit hours. Your Grade Point Average (GPA) for a semester is the sum of grade points earned divided by the total credit hours attempted that semester, so higher-credit courses weigh more heavily.

• The Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the up-to-date mean across all semesters — total grade points earned in the programme divided by total credit hours.
• Transferred credit hours are not counted in the GPA or CGPA; they only count toward the total credit-hour requirement for graduation.
• An “In” (Incomplete) grade carries no numeric value and is an administrative status, not a grade point.

Academic standing at GCU is judged on CGPA at the end of each semester:

• CGPA below 1.50 — the student must take re-admission in the programme (from the first semester), within the maximum programme length of six years.
• CGPA between 1.50 and 2.00 — the student is placed on First Probation and conditionally promoted to the next semester.
• Failing to reach a 2.00 CGPA during First Probation moves the student to Last Probation; failing again means re-admission in the programme.

Re-admission in a programme is allowed only once. A re-admitted student is exempted from courses already passed with a grade of C+ or higher and must complete the degree within six years of first admission.

To be awarded a degree, a GCU student must complete 130–140 credit hours (including 6 credit hours of Dissertation, Project or Internship), pass all prescribed courses, and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.30 at the end of the programme.

A student who does not have a 2.30 CGPA at the end of Semester VIII may be allowed to repeat one or more courses in which the grade is below B− in the following semester to raise the CGPA.

GCU awards academic honours by class position, determined on the basis of CGPA:

• Medal and Academic Roll of Honour — to the top graduate in each major where at least ten graduates completed the programme.
• Academic Roll of Honour only — where fewer than ten students are in the major.
• Academic Certificate of Distinction — to the graduates placing second and third, where the major has at least ten students.

Eligibility requires passing the final examinations of all semesters at the first attempt. Cases of re-admission, semester break, probation, or marks-improvement are not considered for any medal or position.

Credit-hour transfer is decided by the Equivalence Committee. Transferred credit hours are not included in the GPA or CGPA — they count only toward the total credit-hour requirement for graduation.

No course is transferred if its grade is below C (for four-year graduation and Masters programmes) or below B (for MS/MPhil), and credit is transferred only from chartered higher-education institutions. Transfer is capped at 50 credits for a four-year programme, 25 for a Master programme, and 12 for MS/MPhil.
