How grading works at BNU

Beaconhouse National University follows the internationally recognised letter-grade system on a 4.00 scale. In most theory courses grades are awarded on a relative basis — a student's letter grade reflects both the marks obtained and their relative position within the course, not a fixed absolute cut-off.

Some course types are graded on an Absolute Scale instead: projects, internships and thesis work, and any course with fewer than 20 students enrolled after the withdrawal date. The letter grades, their grade points, and the equivalent percentage ranges BNU publishes are shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

How BNU calculates GPA and CGPA

BNU reports a Grade Point Average (GPA) for each semester and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all semesters completed. The CGPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade point is multiplied by its credit hours, and the total is divided by the total credit hours attempted, so higher-credit courses weigh more.

  • The grades I (Incomplete), W and W* (Withdrawn), and P/F (Pass/Fail) carry no numeric value and are excluded from the GPA.
  • Transfer credits from another institution are not counted toward the BNU GPA, though they may count toward degree requirements after review by the University Equivalence Committee.
  • When a course is repeated, the repeat grade replaces the original in the GPA and is marked with an asterisk (*) on the transcript.

Academic probation at BNU

A student is placed on Academic Probation when their CGPA falls below the required minimum — 2.00 for a Bachelor's degree, or 2.50 for an MA/MS/M.Phil. degree.

A student who receives two consecutive probations in the first year, or three consecutive probations in subsequent years, is automatically removed from the university's rolls. Students of the schools of art/design (MDSVAD) and architecture (RHSA) are placed on probation or removed under their own gating policies.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from BNU

The minimum requirement for the award of a degree is a CGPA of 2.00 (on the 4.00 scale) for an undergraduate degree and a CGPA of 2.50 for a Master's degree. Each School certifies its eligible students to the Examinations Department for the award of degrees.

Where a thesis is required, the minimum passing grade is C for a Bachelor's degree and C+ for an MS/M.Phil. degree.

Dean's Honour List and Gold Medal at BNU

Students with excellent academic performance in a semester are placed on the Dean's Honour List. The criterion is the same for undergraduate and Master's students: a GPA of 3.50 in the semester while carrying the full prescribed workload. A student who receives an Incomplete (I) grade is not eligible.

A Gold Medal is awarded to the student with the highest CGPA in each degree programme, provided the graduating batch has at least 10 students (undergraduate) or 5 (MS/M.Phil.). Eligibility also requires a minimum CGPA of 3.80 where the cohort's average CGPA is 3.25 or above, or 3.65 where it is below 3.25, with no F grade, no repeated course, and no disciplinary warning on record.

How transfer credits affect your BNU GPA

Credits transferred from another institution are not counted toward your BNU GPA. They may, however, be considered toward the credit-hour requirements for your degree after an evaluation by the University Equivalence Committee.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at BNU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at BNU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Beaconhouse National University (BNU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from BNU?

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to be awarded an undergraduate degree at BNU, and 2.50 for a Master's degree, along with completing your programme's required credit hours.

Does BNU use relative grading?

Yes. In most theory courses BNU awards letter grades on a relative basis — based on your marks and your relative position in the course. Projects, internships, thesis work, and small courses (fewer than 20 students) are graded on an absolute scale instead.

What is the minimum passing grade at BNU?

The lowest grade that still earns credit is D (grade point 1.00); anything below 50% is an F (0.00) and does not pass. For thesis work the minimum passing grade is higher — C for a Bachelor's degree and C+ for an MS/M.Phil. degree.
