How grading works at the University of Lahore

UOL follows an Absolute Grading System — every course score maps to a fixed percentage band and letter grade, the same for all UOL departments, rather than grading against the class distribution. Grades run on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale. The full marks-to-grade-point table is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

Alongside the graded letters, UOL also uses three administrative marks that carry no grade points: W (official withdrawal from a course), I (Incomplete, for exceptional cases only), and S/US (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, where grade points don't apply).

How UOL calculates SGPA and CGPA

UOL computes two averages, both credit-hour weighted:

  • Semester GPA (SGPA) = sum of (credit hours × grade points earned) for courses in that semester, divided by the semester's total credit hours.
  • Cumulative GPA (CGPA) = the same sum and division carried out across every course taken in every semester.

A W (withdrawal) grade has no impact on the CGPA calculation. An I (Incomplete) grade does not enter the grade point average while pending, but converts automatically to a failing F if it is not resolved within the stipulated period — an I is only valid for one semester.

Probation and repeating courses at UOL

UOL places a student on probation when their academic performance falls below the University's minimum standards, under a separate UOL Probation Policy referenced by these regulations.

Outside of probation, students may repeat a course to improve a low grade: an undergraduate may repeat any course graded below C (capped at fewer than 6 repeats across an eight-semester degree), and an MS/MPhil student may repeat any course graded below C+ (capped at fewer than 3 repeats). In both cases only the better grade counts toward the CGPA, though the original grade still appears on the transcript. These repeat allowances do not apply to a student who is on probation.

Minimum CGPA and credit hours to graduate from UOL

To complete a degree, a UOL student must reach a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for a BS (undergraduate, 16-year) programme, or 2.50 for an MS/MPhil programme.

Undergraduates must also earn at least 50% of their programme's total credit hours from UOL itself; MS/MPhil students must earn a minimum of 15 credit hours from UOL.

Medals, rolls of honor, and class positions at UOL

UOL awards medals, prizes, and rolls of honor to students who pass their courses in the first attempt. Class positions are decided on CGPA; if two or more students tie on CGPA, the tie is broken using two decimal places of CGPA/percentage. No position is awarded in a discipline with fewer than 5 students.

A student loses eligibility for a medal or roll of honor if they passed any course on a second attempt or later, or if their result was not declared within the degree's prescribed time.

Transferring credit hours to and from UOL

Credit hours transfer on a course-to-course basis — a course taken at one university is accepted only if it is equivalent to a course taught at the receiving university. UOL will not transfer a credit hour if the grade earned was below C for an undergraduate course or below B for a graduate course, and it accepts transfers only from HEC-recognized universities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at UOL?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at UOL?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this University of Lahore (UOL) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What grading scale does the University of Lahore use?

UOL uses an Absolute Grading System on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale, with grades from A down to F assigned by fixed percentage bands, the same across all departments. See the Grade Scale Reference on this page for the full table.

What happens to an Incomplete (I) grade at UOL if it isn't resolved?

An I grade is only valid for one semester and does not count toward your grade point average while pending. If it is not resolved within that period, it automatically converts to a failing F grade.

Can you repeat a course to improve your CGPA at UOL?

Yes. Undergraduates can repeat any course graded below C (up to 6 times across the degree); MS/MPhil students can repeat any course graded below C+ (up to 3 times). Only the better grade counts toward the CGPA. This allowance does not apply while a student is on probation.
