East Carolina University (ECU) GPA Calculator

ECU grades undergraduate coursework on a standard plus/minus letter scale (A through D-) with no A+. Grade points are computed by multiplying a course's semester-hour credits by the numerical value assigned to the letter grade received.

An F earns no grade points, though the attempted hours still count toward the GPA denominator.

Your GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total semester hours attempted. AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), NR (grade not yet reported), W (Withdrawn), and XF (academic integrity violation) carry no grade-point value and are not counted in the GPA computation; a withdrawal (W) has no GPA effect at all.

An unresolved Incomplete (I) automatically becomes an F if not replaced with an actual grade by a set deadline (generally the next semester of enrollment, or within one year if the student does not return) — no student may graduate with an incomplete on their record.

Grade Replacement: a student may replace a grade of C-, D+, D, D-, or F up to four times; the original grade, hours, and grade points remain on the transcript, but only the replacement (or last) grade counts toward the GPA. A student who repeats a passed course and receives an F as the new grade loses the original hours and grade points.

Courses taken and transferred from another institution are never included in the ECU GPA, though some degree programs separately use a transfer GPA (by course or cumulative) to determine admission into a major.

Good academic standing at ECU requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on warning; if it remains below 2.0 after the warning semester, the student moves to probation; if it is still below 2.0 after a probation semester, the student is suspended for one semester — unless that semester's own GPA was at least 2.5, in which case probation continues instead of suspension.

A first-semester exception applies to new undergraduate degree-seeking students enrolled in 12+ attempted hours: a semester GPA of 0.0 (including grades still marked Incomplete) results in immediate academic suspension.

Students readmitted after suspension return on "Probation after Suspension" under the same 2.0/2.5 rule. A Forgiveness Policy is available to former students who have been away from ECU for at least two consecutive academic years: once applied, prior coursework graded F is excluded from the recomputed GPA, and the student's standing (good standing or probation) is set by that recomputed cumulative GPA.

To earn a baccalaureate degree, a student must complete at least 25% of the total credit hours required for the degree, and at least 50% of the hours required in the major, directly at ECU — coursework transferred in from another institution cannot substitute for this residency minimum, and it is never counted toward the ECU GPA either way.

Chancellor's List: full-time undergraduates with a 4.0 term GPA and no incomplete grades.

Dean's List: full-time undergraduates with at least a 3.5 term GPA, no grade below C, and no incomplete grades.

Honor Roll: full-time undergraduates with at least a 3.0 term GPA, no grade below C, and no incomplete grades.
