Providence College (PC) GPA Calculator

Beyond the standard letter grades, Providence College's transcript uses several notations that carry no numeric grade-point value and are explicitly excluded from the GPA: P (Pass, in a Pass/Fail course), AU (Audit), and WD (approved Withdrawal). An I (Incomplete) also earns no quality points while outstanding, and converts to NF if not resolved by the mid-semester date of the following semester.

Three additional auto-generated marks appear without a grade-point value: LB (non-credit lab courses), NG (Not Graded, used when a co-requisite course is graded), and NM (No Mark, an unsubmitted grade). TP (Transfer Pending) marks credit awaiting an official transcript from transfer or study-abroad work.

Your quality points for a course equal the credit hours times the value assigned to your grade -- for example, a 3-credit "A" earns 12 quality points, a 5-credit "B" earns 15. Your GPA is the total quality points earned divided by the total credit hours graded. The College does not round your GPA -- the official figure is truncated to the hundredths digit.

Your cumulative GPA includes every course in your academic record. Your major/minor GPA must reach a minimum of 2.00 and is calculated from all courses required specifically for that major or minor (including ones offered outside the home department) plus all courses you take in the major/minor discipline regardless of grade earned, excluding courses covered by the repeat policy.

Academic standing is reviewed at the end of every semester against a minimum cumulative GPA (CGPA) that rises as you progress:

You are also placed on probation if you earn three "F" and/or "NF" grades in a single semester, or four cumulatively across two consecutive semesters. Dismissal also follows two consecutive semesters on probation. A dismissed student may appeal to the Committee on Academic Status or later petition for reinstatement (limited to two dismissals).

All bachelor's degree candidates need a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.00 GPA in their major (some majors and programs set higher GPA or credit-hour requirements). Normally you may not begin your senior year in a major without a 2.0 cumulative average in that major's subject(s).

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for the degree, normally completed over eight semesters of full-time attendance (at least 12 credit hours per semester); the College may allow graduation after seven semesters, or an accelerated timeline, only by successful petition to the Committee on Academic Status.

Full-time undergraduates (12+ credits) with a 3.55 semester GPA or better, no grade below "C," and no incomplete grades, are named to the Dean's List for that semester.

At graduation, students earn Latin honors based on cumulative GPA: cum laude (3.550–3.699), magna cum laude (3.700–3.849), and summa cum laude (3.850–4.000). Honors are computed on the complete academic record, though honors published in graduation programs reflect only computations through the prior fall semester; transfer students' honors are based solely on Providence College coursework.

Each major also recognizes a top performer with the Highest Student in Major Award, which requires at least a 3.55 major GPA.

Grades of "C" or better from College-approved summer school or intersession programs not taught at Providence College are recorded on the transcript with a "T" and do not affect the Providence College GPA.

Credit still pending an official transcript from a transfer institution or study-abroad program is marked TP (Transfer Pending) until the transcript is received and reviewed.
