University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) GPA Calculator

Several notations appear on the UMBC transcript but carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA calculations: I (incomplete), W (withdrawal after the Schedule Adjustment Period), NA (non-applicable), P (Pass, under the Pass/Fail option), S (Satisfactory, under the S/U option), U (Unsatisfactory, under the S/U option), and AU (Audit).

An exception: a grade of "F" earned in a Pass/Fail-graded course is calculated into the GPA the same as any other F.

The semester GPA is found by multiplying each course's credit value by the numerical equivalent of the grade to get a quality-point total, then dividing total quality points by total credit hours attempted in courses included in the GPA. Cumulative GPA is computed the same way.

Courses generally count toward the GPA only if taken in residence at UMBC for a letter grade; transfer courses, developmental courses, zero-credit courses, and test credit (AP/IB/Credit by Exam) are excluded.

When a course is repeated, only the highest grade earned counts in the GPA, though all grades remain on the permanent record; the repeated attempt does not add extra credits toward the degree. Students may not register for the same course more than two times without an approved petition for a third attempt.

Undergraduates with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above are in good academic standing. A semester GPA below 2.0 triggers an academic warning; a cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of a fall or spring semester results in academic probation.

Three consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA below 2.00 result in academic suspension, unless the most recent semester GPA reached 2.00 or higher. After reinstatement, a further semester of cumulative GPA below 2.0 combined with a semester GPA below 2.0 results in academic dismissal.

Reinstatement after suspension generally requires at least 12 credits completed elsewhere with a GPA of at least 2.5, or a significant absence from UMBC, reviewed by the Academic Actions and Reinstatement Committee.

Undergraduate commencement/degree completion eligibility requires 120 credits, 45 upper-level credits, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher; in-progress coursework, including incomplete grades, is included when this eligibility is calculated.

Latin Honors at graduation require at least 60 graded UMBC credit hours and are awarded by cumulative GPA: summa cum laude (3.95–4.0), magna cum laude (3.75–3.9499), and cum laude (3.5–3.7499).

Each semester, students enrolled in at least 12 graded credit hours receive transcript notations based on semester GPA: President's List (4.00 or higher), Dean's List (3.75 or higher), and Semester Academic Honors (3.5 or higher).

Departmental Honors requires at least nine credits of departmental honors coursework and a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the major.
