How grading works at UVA

UVA's undergraduate grading system uses thirteen graded letters, from A+ down to F, each carrying its own value on a 0.00–4.00 scale. See the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact value attached to each grade.

An A+ is capped at the same 4.00 value as a plain A — it does not push your GPA above the 4.0 ceiling. The lowest passing grade is D-, worth 0.70; an F carries no credit and is worth 0.00.

UVA's registrar also lists administrative notations such as CR, P, S, U, W and several withdrawal codes. None of these carry a grade-point value, so they do not affect your GPA — only letter grades A+ through F factor into the calculation.

How UVA calculates your GPA

Grade point averages are computed and printed on the official transcript for undergraduate students only.

UVA does not officially maintain a separate major GPA. To estimate one yourself, multiply the number of credits for each class in your major by that grade's point value, add the results together, and divide by the total number of credits — counting only courses you took for a letter grade.

Courses graded on a Credit/No Credit, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Pass, or Withdrew basis carry no grade-point value and are excluded from the calculation entirely.

Good standing and good academic standing at UVA

UVA considers all currently enrolled students to be in good standing.

Good academic standing is a separate status determined individually by each school at the University, rather than by one university-wide GPA floor — check with your school of enrollment for its specific threshold.

Dean's List and graduation honors at UVA

Full-time undergraduates qualify for their school's Dean's List each semester with a minimum of 15 graded credits and no F, NC, or NG grade. The required GPA varies by school:

  • 3.40 — School of Engineering and Applied Science
  • 3.50 — College of Arts and Sciences
  • 3.70 — School of Architecture, School of Education and Human Development, Frank Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy, School of Nursing
  • 3.75 — McIntire School of Commerce

Graduation honors also vary by school, typically awarded in three tiers (for example "with distinction," "with high distinction," "with highest distinction") starting around a 3.4–3.6 cumulative GPA and rising to 3.8–3.9 for the highest tier — consult your school's specific bands before graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at UVA?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at UVA?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this University of Virginia (UVA) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does UVA give an A+, and is it worth more than a 4.0?

UVA does award an A+, but it is worth the same 4.00 grade points as a plain A — it does not push your GPA above the 4.0 ceiling. Both are the top grade on UVA's scale.

Does UVA give a D- grade?

Yes. D- is UVA's lowest passing grade, worth 0.70 grade points, one step below a D (1.00) on the school's 0.00–4.00 scale.

Do Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit courses count toward my UVA GPA?

No. Grades such as CR (Credit), P (Passing), S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), and the various Withdrew codes carry no grade-point value at UVA and are left out of the GPA calculation entirely — only letter grades A+ through F are counted.

Does UVA rank students by class rank?

No. The University of Virginia states plainly that it "does not maintain class ranking."

Do graduate students at UVA get an official GPA on their transcript?

UVA's official transcript computes and prints a GPA for undergraduate students only. Graduate and professional programs, including the School of Law, are governed by their own separate academic policies.

What GPA do I need for the Dean's List at UVA?

It depends on your school: 3.40 for Engineering, 3.50 for Arts & Sciences, 3.70 for Architecture, Education and Human Development, Batten, and Nursing, and 3.75 for Commerce — plus a minimum of 15 graded credits each semester and no F, NC, or NG grade.

Source: Academic Record Information — "Honors & Awards: Dean's List" table — verified Aug 2026

Does the UVA School of Law use the same grading scale?

No. UVA's undergraduate grade-point table applies to undergraduate students only. The School of Law maintains its own separate academic policies and grading rules, published on the Law School's own site rather than the University Registrar's undergraduate pages.
