Imperial Valley College GPA Calculator

Grades are based upon the quality of work done in courses offered for credit and are issued at the end of each term.

P (Passing) and NP (No Pass) units are not counted in the GPA. Non-evaluative symbols (I, W, EW, IP, MW, RD) are never used in calculating grade points or units attempted.

The grade point average is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned (units earned in a course multiplied by that grade's point value) by the total units attempted in courses graded A, B, C, D, or F. Grades earned in non-degree-applicable courses are not included in the degree-applicable GPA.

Most courses may be repeated twice after a substandard grade (D, F, NP) or a W; a third attempt requires a petition. All repeated grades replace the previous attempt in the GPA calculation. Academic Renewal lets a student petition, one time only, to exclude D and F grades (up to 30 units) from the GPA if two or more years have passed and a qualifying subsequent GPA has been earned.

Students who have attempted 12 or more units are placed on Scholastic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, and are removed once it returns to 2.0 or higher. Scholastic Dismissal follows a cumulative GPA below 2.0 for three consecutive semesters (excluding Winter and Summer). A separate Lack-of-Progress Probation applies when 50% or more of attempted units carry W, I, or NP; three consecutive semesters of this leads to Lack-of-Progress Dismissal. Dismissed students may petition for reinstatement.

A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in all degree-applicable coursework is required to earn an AA or AS degree (2.0 in CSU-transferable coursework for an AA-T/AS-T degree), counting official transcripts from every college and university attended. All major-requirement courses must additionally be completed with a grade of C or better.

Graduation Latin honors are based on cumulative GPA: Cum Laude (3.50-3.69), Magna Cum Laude (3.70-3.89), and Summa Cum Laude (3.90 or higher).

Each semester, students completing 12 or more graded units qualify for honor rolls by GPA: Dean's List (3.0-3.49) and President's Honor List (3.5-4.0).

Imperial Valley College grants credit for lower-division units earned at regionally accredited institutions. All such courses become part of the student's unit and GPA calculation, using the evaluative symbols the sending institution assigned, unless the sending institution itself excluded them. Duplicate courses are included in the GPA calculation, though duplicate credit is excluded from the unit total.
