How CWI Calculates GPA

CWI calculates several types of GPA depending on context. Term GPA covers coursework in a single term and is used for the President's List and Dean's List. Institutional GPA covers all coursework taken at CWI. Cumulative GPA adds accepted college-level transfer coursework and is used to determine academic standing. For graduation, CWI separately computes an Institutional GPA for Graduation (used for graduation honors) and an Overall GPA for Graduation (used to confirm the 2.0 minimum required to graduate) — both excluding developmental coursework.

Quality points equal a course's grade points multiplied by its credit hours; GPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours attempted. Audited courses and Incomplete grades are not counted.

Academic Standing at CWI

Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher are in good standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.00 places a student on academic warning for the following semester; the student returns to good standing once cumulative GPA reaches 2.00 or higher.

A student on academic warning who does not earn at least a 2.00 term GPA is placed on academic contract and must meet with an advisor before registering. Failing to earn a 2.00 term GPA while under contract results in academic suspension for the next enrollment term (excluding summer); a second failure results in another suspension.

Graduation GPA Requirement

An Overall GPA of 2.0 or higher is required to graduate with a degree or certificate. Students must also complete at least twenty percent (20%) of the credits required for their certificate or degree at CWI.

Graduation and Term Honors

Graduation honors are based on Institutional GPA: Summa Cum Laude (3.90–4.00 GPA), Magna Cum Laude (3.70–3.89 GPA), and Cum Laude (3.50–3.69 GPA). Students with any Incomplete ("I") grade on their record are not eligible.

Each term, students who complete 6 or more credits of letter-graded coursework, are degree-seeking, and are in good standing (2.00 minimum cumulative GPA) qualify for the President's List (4.00 Term GPA) or Dean's List (3.50–3.99 Term GPA). Incomplete or missing grades disqualify a student from either list.

Transfer Credit and GPA

Cumulative GPA and Overall GPA for Graduation include college-level transfer coursework accepted by CWI, in addition to coursework taken at CWI. Transfer students must still complete at least 20% of the credits required for their certificate or degree at CWI.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at CWI?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at CWI?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this College of Western Idaho (CWI) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
