Grade Symbols Not Used in GPA

In addition to the standard A-F scale, STLCC transcripts use several symbols that carry no grade-point value and are not computed in GPA:

  • I (Incomplete) — work not finished for reasons beyond the student's control; converts to a permanent F if not completed within one year.
  • PR (Progress, Re-Enroll) — no credit earned and no grade-point value; available only in courses below 100-level, PRD courses, and certain skills courses.
  • R (Credit for Prior Learning) — credit earned by examination; does not count toward the residency requirement for graduation.
  • T (Audit) — enrollment with no intent to earn credit; does not affect GPA.
  • S (Satisfactory) — credit awarded toward graduation but not used in GPA calculations.
  • U (Unsatisfactory) — no credit and no grade points awarded.
  • W (Withdrawal) — issued for withdrawals completed by the end of the 12th week; does not affect GPA.
  • NG (No Grade) — temporary designator used when an instructor has not yet assigned a grade.

How GPA Is Calculated

Cumulative grade point average (GPA) is determined by multiplying the number of grade points for each grade (A, B, C, D) in a course by the number of semester hours for that course, then dividing the total by the number of semester hours attempted. Transfer coursework is not included in the overall GPA.

Repeating courses: when a student repeats a course, the highest grade earned is used in calculating cumulative credit hours and GPA; all enrollments and grades remain on the transcript.

Academic forgiveness: students returning after an absence of five calendar years may apply, once in their academic career, to have all coursework with grades below C excluded from the GPA calculation. Courses removed this way cannot be used to meet degree requirements, but remain on the transcript.

Grade Requirements Affecting Degree Completion

A grade of D may not satisfy requirements in some degree or certificate programs.

Credit awarded under the R (Credit for Prior Learning) grade does not count toward the residency requirement for graduation.

Transfer Grade Codes

Transfer grades indicate courses a student completed at another school that STLCC has approved for credit. These grades are not computed in the overall GPA, though the credits can apply toward a student's declared degree if the courses meet STLCC program requirements.

  • TR — transferable credit earned at another institution with a grade of C or better, prior to Spring 2024.
  • TD — transferable credit earned at another institution with a grade of D, prior to Spring 2024.
  • TR-A / TR-B / TR-C / TR-D — transferable credit earned at another institution with the corresponding letter grade, effective Summer 2024 onward.
  • TR-P — transferable credit graded P (Pass) at the originating institution for COVID-related grade-mode reasons.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at STLCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at STLCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Saint Louis Community College (STLCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
