Concordia University GPA Calculator

Concordia uses a letter-grade system on a 0.00–4.30 scale. At the end of each course, the instructor submits a letter grade, and grade points are assigned from A+ (4.30, Outstanding) down to D- (0.70, Marginal Pass), with F, FNS, and R all recorded as failing grades worth 0.00 grade points.

Grades are grouped into broader classifications: A+/A/A- are “Outstanding,” B+/B/B- are “Very Good,” C+/C/C- are “Satisfactory,” D+/D/D- are “Marginal Pass,” and F/FNS/R range from “Poor” to “Very Poor” failure.

F indicates failure in a course where a supplemental exam is available; FNS indicates failure where no supplemental exam is available; R is the grade assigned specifically when a student fails a supplemental examination.

Grade point averages are calculated for evaluating academic achievement, honours standing, prizes, and academic standing. All of Concordia's GPAs are weighted and calculated independently of one another:

Weighted GPA = Σ(course credits × grade points) ÷ Σ(credits attempted)

Concordia tracks several distinct GPAs: the Assessment GPA (AGPA), calculated at the end of each academic year once a student has attempted at least 12 credits; the Cumulative GPA (CGPA), a running total since admission to the current degree or certificate program; the Final Graduation GPA (FGGPA), a CGPA of all courses applicable to the degree, calculated only when a student graduates; and the Term GPA (TGPA), calculated per term for advising reference only — it is never used in any other GPA calculation.

Repeating a course: if a course is taken more than once, only the grade from the latest attempt counts toward the AGPA, CGPA, and FGGPA — earlier attempts are dropped. The one exception is a grade assigned as a penalty for academic misconduct, which remains in the calculation whether or not the course is repeated.

Students are required to maintain an acceptable standard of scholarship, and academic standing is assessed at the end of every year based on the Assessment GPA (AGPA). Failed students and students in conditional standing are not eligible to write supplemental examinations, and undergraduate students classified as failed may not reregister as Independent students.

Specific GPA thresholds for academic standing are set separately by each Faculty — Arts and Science, the John Molson School of Business, the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science, and the Faculty of Fine Arts — rather than in one university-wide table.

Degree and certificate candidates who expect to complete their requirements must apply for graduation online through the Student Hub; a graduation fee applies whether or not a student attends convocation. Students in microprograms are not required to apply for graduation and instead receive a letter once their program requirements are complete.

Concordia recognizes two levels of high academic achievement, based on the Final Graduation Grade Point Average (FGGPA): a degree “With Distinction” is awarded for an FGGPA of at least 3.40 and below 4.00, and a degree “With Great Distinction” is awarded for an FGGPA of 4.00 or greater.

Courses taken at another institution may be transferred toward a Concordia degree or certificate if the grade earned is C- or better (or equivalent) and the receiving Faculty deems the course equivalent — the transferred credits do not carry the corresponding grade into Concordia's GPA.

Internal transfers work differently: courses transferred from an incomplete (or, in certain cases, completed) Concordia degree, certificate, microprogram, or the Kaié:ri Nikawerá:ke Indigenous Bridging Program carry both the credits and the grade, provided the grade was C- or better. Courses completed while registered with Independent status may also transfer with their grade at C- or better, up to a maximum of 30 credits toward a degree.
